MONTREAL — A Montreal-based motorsports company — and corporate sister of the firm that promotes Montreal’s Grand Prix event — has declared bankruptcy.

Octane Motorsports Events Inc., presided over by François Dumontier, owes creditors across the country over $5.4 million according to bankruptcy filings.

Dumontier, also president of Octane Racing Group Inc., promoter of the Formula One Grand Prix du Canada, did not respond to an interview request Thursday.

One of the biggest creditors is a numbered Quebec company that is a Dumontier family trust. It is owned almost $3 million, according to filings.

The bankruptcy has also left scores of Montreal-area companies with stacks of unpaid bills; among them, Garda Canada Security Corp., Omnison, and Consortium Echo-Logique.

Robert Megeney, president of Event Labor Works whose outstanding Octane Motorsports accounts top $27,000, said he hopes for the best outcome in the bankruptcy proceedings.

“At this point in time, we are just going with the flow,” he said.

Octane Motorsports was best known as promoter of Edmonton’s IndyCar race.

On Sept. 21, Edmonton city officials announced that Octane Motorsports had informed them that it would not produce the IndyCar race in July 2013 as planned.

In a news release, Octane said that to survive, the event needed a promise of more spectators and more support from local businesses, and that the company wasn’t confident that would happen.

“Despite our tight management policies and all our efforts to offer to the fans a world-class spectacle, we were not able to make this event profitable and nothing allows us to hope for a better profitability next year,” Octane stated then.

The Octane Group of companies has worked on the organization and promotion of more than 70 motorsports events around the world, according to its website.

I just saw this on twitter from Jenna Fryer.

NASCAR could not agree with Montreal promoter, Nationwide Series won't return in 2013.

:(

It sounds like Nascar is looking at filling the hole in the schedule with a Nationwide race in a new market. If they are looking to replace a Road Course with another Road Course, I can see Mosport or Mid-Ohio being a real possibility here.

NASCAR now owns Road Atlanta, since that was part of Panoz, which they own after the merger. So there is that.

Well, Ron Fellows does own part of Mosport, and he's said publicly that he would welcome NASCAR with open arms if they wanted it.

Not what I was hoping for :(

Pretty sure Stenhouse was the only one who ran the rear exit exhaust, and only for the last run of the day.

Road Atlanta would be an acceptable replacement in my book. Nice track with some good passing opportunities.

Road Atlanta should be on the Sprint Cup schedule as well, since the Atlanta market needs two races.

I like it, but definitely looks a bit touched up. In particular the front grille looks shopped, and the roofline won't be as low as that (maybe just the perspective of the shot) . I reckon it's a real shot of the new Holden that C&D has touched up.

Finch says start-and-park teams make too much: Team owner James Finch hopes his #51-Phoenix Racing car remains on the track in 2013, but he'd like a little help from NASCAR to do it. Finch, who is losing driver Kurt Busch to Furniture Row Racing, wants to race for more money, and he isn't asking NASCAR and the tracks to spend more-just pay less to teams that start a race and park early. With typically five to seven Sprint Cup teams parking their cars early each week, Finch believes teams that finish in the top 35 should earn significantly more money than those that park early and finish in the back of pack. "I'm trying to get NASCAR to move some of the money up that the start-and-park guys are getting so we can race (for it) from 35th to 25th," Finch said Friday at Talladega Superspeedway. "I'm getting (as little as) $2,000 more to run 500 miles than they do to play. Move it up and if they want it, let them race or it. & That's not racing." Finch, whose team is 27th in the owner standings, so far doesn't have sponsorship for 2013. Because NASCAR is switching to a new body style for 2013, Finch said he will finish out 2012 to best use his inventory of cars. "What am I going to do with these cars?" Finch said. "When I get through (this year), I throw them away."(Sporting News)(10-6-2012)

Funny. This coming from the guy that had no problem what so ever cashing NASCAR's checks when his team use to start and park back in 08,09 and 2010.

The Darrell Waltrip past champions provisional just gained more value again.

You know the moment some start & park knocks Danica out of the field, they'll change it back.
