IMS with lights could mean an Indy 500 run on Saturday night paving the way for more Cup drivers to easily pull double duty with the 600.

Running the 400 at night won't do shit. The race blows and is actually worse than most of the bland as hell Cup races. Indy means far, far less to the tin top guys than it does to the open wheelers. Rusty Wallace, in what was probably the best sentence he's uttered since leaving the cockpit of the #2, said as much in the pre-race on Saturday.

The day the Indy 500 is run on a Saturday night is the day I give up on motorsport.

Allmendinger has been let go by Penske.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

I'm sure Shell/Pennzoil made this decision for Roger.

Real shame for AJ, really thought this was going to kickstart his career. Oh well...

For the sake of this discussion, let's say Penske feels Hornish isn't ready to get back in a full-time Cup ride next year....

Would he be desperate enough to rehire Kurt Busch, assuming he avoids any behavioral fuckups the rest of this season?

The recovery programme takes 6 months. AJ only had a 1 year deal. Based on performance, he was gone before this happened, imo.

Paves the way for Hornish or Kligerman.

I would really like to see what PK could do in a Cup car.

Well this has to be up there in the sporting opportunities wasted list.

I think that is really going to depend on the circumstances of his positive result though. If he has some addiction issue or took something knowingly, then yeah it's a big waste of an opportunity. If it was a weird issue done unknowingly, then I think it's a bit unfair to judge AJ with that level of severity.

Whatever the case, I think its worth mentioning that he has handled this very maturely, especially in comparison to Mayfield. He's found a way to defend himself without casting himself as some victim of lies and deception. Plus he's already enrolled in the program to regain eligibility, so he's been nothing but cooperative.

By the way, if you want to talk about the top of the list of "sporting opportunities wasted" you'll have to consider guys like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Len_Bias

I honestly thought this when I heard AJ was was suspended for Daytona last month. I doubt it happens, but stranger things have happened, like JWT being locked into a sprint cup race.

Now that we pretty much know that Matt Kenseth will going to the #20 next year, I think it will either be Joey Logano or Trevor Bayne in the 22 next year. I have no idea what Trevor's plan is with Roush next year, but if the opportunity comes up he needs to take it with Roger. Personally speaking, I'd gamble on Bayne over Logano and Kurt.

Who knows though, maybe Sam Hornish will impress Roger and earn himself the ride.

Logano in a Ford would be completing the circle.

I like Trevor, but considering Logano's performance in Nationwide vs Bayne's, I'd take Logano.

Regardless of whether he's a doper or not, it's still the result of stupidity and can be accurately considered an opportunity wasted. Wouldn't you expect sports professionals paid this much to know every item that goes onto or in their body and steer clear of the ones that might come close to the banned substance list?

Also agree that AJ has handled it relatively well, but he's still boned. He might get a ride in trucks to finish out his career if he's lucky.

Maybe self-circumspection should be expected, but there are dozens of cases every year where athletes test positive for something that they unknowingly ingested.

Or he could lead the rise of IndyCar again. Or he could go and race sportscars.

NASCAR's door being closed will probably be a good thing for him.

I wouldn't complain if AJ ended up back in open wheelers.

Allmendinger belongs in open wheel where he can be successful and send a big "fuck you" to NASCAR. :p

AJ Foyt is apparently interested in hiring Almendinger for an IndyCar ride.

Isn't AJ Foyt interested in hiring every NASCAR driver without a ride, ever?

Still, the AJ-AJ teamup would at least make marketing easy.
