Yeah, I guess the thought of what Jimmie did last year in driving the 5 car hadn't even crossed my mind. One of the sport's biggest stars changing numbers permanently would be a huge deal, so it's probably just a one-off.

Does anyone have any more info on this?

Quote:
Q: Tim Richmond won the 1986 Southern 500 at Darlington. However, something incredibly weird occurred during the race. What happened?

A: Allegedly, a woman actually attempted to drive her personal car out onto the track during the race from the opening in the wall at the end of the frontstretch pits. The attempt not make air on ESPN because of on and off rain showers that resulted in the race taking the better part of eight hours to run (ESPN chose to jump back and forth between different live events that day to compensate). Thankfully, the woman was stopped before venturing out into traffic.

Someone actually managed to get their road car on the track in a race at the Columbia Speedway in 1952.

On lap 25, a spectator tried to drive his car across the track and E.C. Ramsey's Ford slammed into it. The furious Ramsey climbed out of his car and beat up the drunken driver.

The new number rumor for Kenseth has been revealed:
Quote:
Fifth Third Bancorp announced a multi-year marketing partnership with Roush Fenway Racing, beginning this season with four races as the primary sponsor of Matt Kenseth's #17 Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. A similar number of races for the following years will be announced at a later date.
Fifth Third will be the primary sponsor of Kenseth's Ford at four Sprint Cup Series races in 2012 including:
Sprint All Star Race in Charlotte, NC on May 19
Quaker State 400 in Sparta, KY on June 30
Crown Royal's "Your Hero's Name Here" race in Indianapolis, IN on July 29
Pure Michigan 400 in Brooklyn, MI on August 19
"Fifth Third Bank is excited to partner with Roush Fenway Racing and Matt Kenseth on this Sprint Cup Series sponsorship," said Greg Carmichael, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fifth Third Bancorp. "Our organizations share many common values including a focus on teamwork and a desire to challenge the status quo to be the best at what we do. We are looking forward to working with the Roush Fenway Racing organization, and Matt Kenseth, to help drive our business and build the Fifth Third Bank brand." The partnership between Fifth Third Bank and Roush Fenway Racing was announced Monday, May 14th at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte where the paint scheme for the Fifth Third Ford Fusion was also unveiled.(4-traders.com), see an image of the car on the #17 Team Schemes page.

So it all turned out to be the sponsor name.

Not a bad looking car. I almost took a job with Fifth Third bank last summer.

Quote:
Holden to announce export of the Commodore to U.S. as Chevrolet SS: Holden will announce tomorrow an export program for the Commodore, which will see the Adelaide [Australia] made car become a race and showroom star in the United States. Though sales of the Elizabeth-produced sedan continue to slide in Australia, a Commodore V8 will be exported to America where it will be sold with the Chevrolet SS Performance badge. In that guise, it would also star for the heartland brand in the NASCAR stock car racing series, which runs second only to Formula One in global popularity. Holden has been testing left-hand drive cars on public roads in Victoria in recent weeks and running it head-to-head with one of its strongest potential rivals, the Dodge Charger, as it finalises its end of the important new deal. Motorsport sources in the USA hint that an announcement of the Chevrolet SS program is imminent, including the Holden connection. The coming VF Commodore as the donor car for the program ticks the boxes for American muscle car fans, and NASCAR stock car racing as well, thanks to its V8 engine, large body and rear-wheel drive. Former GM Holden president Mark Reuss, now the head of GM operations in the US and a known fan and supporter of the Commodore, dodged Carsguide's questions on a link between the SS program and the Commodore. Holden chairman Mike Devereux also refused to comment on the strengthening rumours in the US, which were triggered by the announcement. Full-scale testing of the racer is expected to begin soon, and the bodywork expected to be revealed at the same time.()(5-16-2012)

This is awesome news. The Pontiac G8 was based on the Commodore and that was easily the best handling sedan I ever test drove or drove at all. And all the better if the next cup car is modeled on it as well.

First shot of the 2013 Chevy race car, based on the Chevy SS. Please lawdy, get rid of those sharkfins, atleast at non-SS tracks.
