"Success is where preparation and opportunity meet." -Bobby Unser.

Push play and read the following introduction of the greatest spectacle of racing with Paul Page's iconic voice.

Like one wise man once said, the Indy is a moment of rejoice just like a wedding or the birth of a child. Like Christmas holidays, every year we witness the miracle of joy, iconic moments with tears and chills, dramatic scenes and moments that will shape our future. Moments we remember for a life time. We gather here as a family once again to celebrate the tradition. The tradition of the quest for immortality in the history of the greatest spectacle in racing.

The 105th Indianapolis 500 also marks as the 110th anniversary of the first race here held in the sacred grounds of motorsports. And what's better way to celebrate this milestone than having plenty of cars to guarantee Bump Day with possibility of shocking outcome. Will some of the win contenders fail to qualify? Can Juan Pablo Montoya or Helio Castroneves clinch the win one more time and show it to the full time entries how it's done? So many open questions which will be answered in the most incorruptible way, completing the full race and seeing the checkered flag first of thirty three starting drivers and getting your face carved on the legendary Borg-Warner Trophy. Quoting Mario Andretti, "Nothing compares to the Indianapolis 500." is all you need to know what's up this time.

Ladies and gentlemen, racing fans around the world, welcome back again for the Month of May and the Indianapolis 500 for the hundred and fifth time! Welcome back home again!

Rule changes:
The temperature requirement rule has been changed to "45-45". That requires both the ambient temperature to be 45 °F (7 °C) or higher, and the track surface temperature to be 45 °F (7 °C) or higher before cars are allowed out on the circuit. Previously the rule was "50-50".

Event changes:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the second year in a row, the annual Pit Stop Challenge will not be held. In addition the Carb Day concert and Snake Pit concerts have been cancelled.

The GMR Grand Prix is scheduled to return to the month of May, again serving as the opening weekend of track activity. Practice, time trials, and other ancillary events are scheduled for the two weeks leading up to the race. The Freedom 100, however, will not be held as the 2021 Indy Lights season only includes a race on the road course during GMR Grand Prix weekend.

Just to be clear, I was making this starting post for the last two weeks and I found out just now that Bobby Unser slept away yesterday.

Godspeed, Bobby.

Indeed, Lucas. Indeed.

What a "fluke" it is that IndyCar is returning to the Pike's Peak, or Unser's Peak as it was dubbed back in the day, in the same year when we lost Bobby.

Andretti to announce 6th entry tomorrow.

And no one knows who's gonna be the driver.

So... Marco is 5th? Then 6th could be Askew?

Well, even in the heydays there was days with very little if no track actions at all due weather. And now with single manufacturer and data collectors, do anyone really practice more than what they already do? Media hype these days doesn't start (or need) to pick up until the qualifying is just around the corner.

But don't get me wrong, it would be cool if we had one-off cars/manufacturers just for the 500. Or testing of different tires or aerodesigns to get the maxed out package for the race. Modern format is good for current IndyCar and today's average Joes as getting information is easier and getting bored in three minutes is somewhat a standard.

But the track is still the same! :flag:

Just a bit of rule opening just for the 500 (like the USAC/CART days which meant we could see things like the V6 menard and the Ilmor beast), would be good.

Unlimited boost would be good. But no modifications allowed to make them last longer.

This is a fitting place to share this here. I'm quite sure they will pay a tribute to Bobby in the Indy 500 too.

but yay, shame it ain't happening

where is Indycar going to find homegrown oval talents if they are not going to look for it?

As I understand it, a lot of the reason it was dropped (at least as far as the public statements went) was the need for Indy to potentially be flexible in case COVID forced another schedule shift. The drop happened in October last year, when there was still a lot of uncertainty about the pandemic.

So hopefully it will return next year, unless the statement given to the public was smoke and mirrors.

Passive agg...what? No...I was just being lazy when copying. And thinking forward, as the next Freedom 100 is going to be the 17th. :p

Top Gun shook down their car at Gateway today, so 36 is still likely.
