Legend is an understatement. When I think back to being a kid first getting into F1, it's Murray's voice I hear, with his unmatched passion and enthusiasm for the sport. He had such an infectious energy and excitement which has given me and millions of others so many fond memories.

RIP Murray.

He had perhaps the most recognisable voice in broadcasting and as a personality was one of a kind. He might no longer be with us but Murray will live on in the memories of a lot of people for a long time.

RIP, Murray Walker.

When Murray retired, it felt like the end of an era. Now when he's gone, it feels like F1 has lost its greatest link to the history of the sport. For the first five decades Formula One was Murray, and Murray was Formula One. His enthusiasm was known by everyone all around the world. Even we non-British fans grew up with Murray, though F1 games and through pixelated MPEG-files that you would download with a dial-up modem.

There will never be another commentator as great as Murray Walker. But his voice will never die as F1 highlights with Murray's commentary on YouTube will remain to excite more and more new generations.

His autobiography goes into almost as much detail of his 'before F1' life as it does the commentating jobs, and it's a really entertaining and interesting read. With the added bonus that you hear it all in his voice.

What a sad day for motorsport. RIP.

A voice that transcended the sport. Rest in peace Murray, thank you for all the memorable moments. Time to spend the evening watching old BBC/ITV F1 stuff on YouTube to celebrate a life we’ll lived

When he was a tank commander in WW2, he looked over the bank of a river in germany during the rush to liberate Nazi occupied territories, and found his dad looking back at him.
The story he tells that his dad managed to wangle some favours to become a war correspondant for a newspaper just to check on his boy amazingly touching when I read it, such a sweet tale.

No wonder he spent the rest of his life trying to live up to his dad's example, and I hope wherever he is, they're reunited now with Graham Snr being very proud of his boy.

Exactly. Even with our satisfactory commentary in the US, I still knew who Murray was and as the years have passed and my collection of classic F1 races grown, it's the definitive BBC broadcasts featuring his immortal voice that have become as familiar to me.

Godspeed Murray...

I most likely wouldn't have got the F1 bug but for Murray. Rest in Peace Murray.

Its shame they never knighted this man for all the work and people he reached worldwide, such great legacy he leaves behind.
Rest in Peace Mr. Walker.

Lewis spins out of the final corner and Mazepin pisses himself laughing about how close he was to hitting him

Calm down guy, we already know you're weird.

RIP Murray. I never once watched a live race with his commentary, yet he also was the voice of F1 to me.

From the day I first heard him in the very first Playstation F1 game, to retroactively enjoying his clips once we had the chance to have all footage available to us on the web - sadly, mostly after his retirement. I can feel the warmth that the British members all must have felt when tuning in every other Sunday to his broadcasts.

yeah pretty much exactly the same experience and sentiment from me.

He would've been absolutely amazing as a commentator for 80s/90s CART races.
