I'm going to be an optimist and say there will be 3 races not won by Mercedes this year. Why three? Its less depressing than zero. I'll grant Max two wins and one for an outlier.

Too optimistic???

They have been developing their 21 car since August while other teams had to bring improvements to their 20 car.

Shh, we're pretending there is something to look forward to...

Haha my thoughts exactly. This is that part of the off-season where we start hyping up, wondering what surprises lie ahead, against any rational arguments that point otherwise.

And then we're abruptly back to our senses by the time the first round's FP2 (if not FP1) ends

the good thing is that F1 races are always before the Indycar races, so if we get a shit race, the following ones will be great, even though it might be rubbish

F1’s new plan for three Saturday sprint races in 2021 faces Thursday vote

They never give up, do they? It's all about money: the more there's action and entertainment, the more headlines and clicks Liberty Media makes. And because Ross Brawn & Co. are incapable to solve bigger problems of F1 and no new teams are allowed to join F1, they get lazy and start fixing things that don't need fixing like the weekend format

And for sure, due to their novelty, sprint races will get more viewers so they will be permanent from 2022 onwards.

Fuck. This. Shit. :x

success ballast is a good option and add even more if they start sandbagging

plus they're picking the wrong races for that, they should do those gimmicks at the places we hate like Abu Dhabi, Sochi and Barcelona

Really, are we going to complain because a race would replace a non-race session? Especially given that according to the article, they're planning to do this at some of the most exciting tracks: Canada, Monza and Interlagos?

I'm all for it. We had two venues at Austria last year and both were great races. More of good tracks can only be good.

And this is entirely independent from any regulations that would improve racing or draw more teams. I'm getting tired of this lazy fallacious argument that if a company is doing something, it necessarily means they're taking away from something else or drawing focus from it. That's not how any organisation works, especially when it's two distinct parallel actions that are not in competition with each other.

There are too many races as it is. They are becoming background noises, not Grand Prix.

But then again, if there are no races then weekends wouldn't be weekends.

Fuck it, I'd rather watch a sprint race, than qualifying.

What I loved about 1-lap qualifying, was that the slight mistake would ruin the starting position for a frontrunner. Now, they just try again. I'd rather have a chance for a Mercedes to lose the front wing at turn one in a sprint race, or actually having to race for the pole, than watching them taking pole position by a freaking mile, with just 8 other cars on track.

Yeah, I was one of the few people that actually loved the 1-lap qualifying. They should bring that back. And maybe just drop the entire friday. We saw that that could also spice things up slightly.

I liked that either. Everybody had equal time on the track, no one driving slow on purpose

plus it would give a chance to show as "enviromental" as they will be using just on tire set on qualifying and doing less laps thus burning less fuel

results wouldn't change that much as Mercedes could get front row start in all races

Both have made mistakes early on in qualifying. If that would have happened on a 1-lap qualifying they where screwed. Plus I wonder how Bottas would have handled the extra stress of 1-lap qualifying. I can see him mess up even more.

1 lap qlf results were mostly interesting because of fuel differences, that's no longer a factor now.

Anyone who wants one lap Q - just go watch a top 10 shootout in Supercars. Without mistakes they are boring.

Yeh F1 has too much practice. It should start on saturday with 1 practice before QLF, but the one like it was in 2003, a single lap for everyone.

Supercars is boring full stop. The "old" qualifying format wasn't 1 lap. They had 12 laps...so basically 4 laps in 3 runs. The problem was everyone just went out at the end. If they just said you have to do at least 1 lap every 15 minutes a lot of the problems would have been solved.

And current qualifying isnt boring without mistakes?
Under normal circumstances both will generate basically equal grids.

The difference is that unless someone makes a massive mistake and seriously damages the car, in the current setup they can correct their mistakes.

1LQ isnt the holy grail to making qualifying super exciting but it drastically limits the leeway of making a mistake.

1 lap Q just increases the pressure a bit, but you would expect drivers at F1 level to be able to hot lap without a mistake

agreed. But even Hamilton sometimes makes a mistake in Q1.

Personally I would even make the drivers draw straws right before qualifying to spice things up further. In most cases it wont affect things but in the rare occassion of a drying track or rain later in the session things get randomized even more.
