That's Superlicence rules for you.

Every team should be allowed to have a couple of testing sessions per year in their current spec cars, focused on allowing test drivers to get the needed mileage to apply for a Superlicence. And get rid of that damn points system.

For the top teams, they'd be ready for any circumstances and the smaller teams can sell the seat time to the highest bidder. Win win for everyone.

They wait till someone crashes before fixing it. Just look at Kyle Busch at Daytona or Greg Hodnett.

Gutierrez did make 7 Indycar starts in 2017.

Regardless, if you consider the "hybrid" era, post 2013, Esteban has 40 race starts and 2.5 years as a development/test/reserve driver, while Di Resta has 1 start and 2 years as a "reserve" driver for Williams (where he only drove the car once).

The only difference between the two is Di Resta has a few seasons of DTM and a handful of endurance races, nothing close to F1 spec. It doesn't make much sense.

I get it, but at the same time, I don't.

You're right, it's absolutely bizarre. The FIA have been messing around with the Super License rules way too much for my liking. I get that F1 should be for elite drivers but to me there's a cynical element to the way they've basically shut down a number of routes into F1 in an attempt to virtually make it mandatory to do F2 to get in. F2 (and GP2 and F3000 before it) has traditionally been a terrible proving ground for young drivers. Historically the best drivers usually come into F1 direct from F3, so that they don't end up ruined by trying to beat drivers who have been in the second tier for virtually a decade, who know the cars and tyres intimately but aren't actually talented or financially-backed enough to get into F1

It's created a massive logjam, where the drivers who are eligible aren't good enough and the drivers who are good enough aren't eligible - meanwhile Raikkonen's tooling around in F1 in his 40s for no reason other than his own personal satisfaction (which he doesn't even get at the moment because the Alfa's shit)

The massive reduction in testing on top of that makes it so hard to get in - and now they're basically saying that even if you have F1 experience it has to be within a very narrow timeframe, when the grid turnover is so small that there are actually hardly any drivers out there who could stand in, even before you factor in manufacturer allegiances, participation in other series

I appreciate F1 cars are hard to drive, but Christ, Esteban Gutierrez isn't exactly Vladimir Arabadzhiev. There should be an element of common sense somewhere along the line

Motorsport actually just did a piece with the eligible drivers to race right now:

Button
Di Resta
Palmer
Wehrlein
Vandoorne
Sirotkin
Alonso
Hartley
Ericsson
Kubica

The criteria being "now says that any driver who has not raced for three full seasons has to complete 300km of testing within 180 days of the licence application, meaning any driver who has not raced in F1 since 2016, and has not tested since February this year, cannot have a superlicence." Button and Di Resta are eligible because of their one-offs in 2017.

I've read that Hulk is already confirmed to race, though.

Like all things F1 the Superlicence system is just plain dumb. So finishing 3rd in Indy Car is worth the same amount as 3rd in F3 (20 points) and same same finishing 5th in in F2!!!! and less than winning Japanese Super Formula (25)????

So by this years standings Dan Ticktum (5th F2) and David Beckman (3rd F3) are just as good as Joseph Newgarden (3rd Indy)??? Oh yeah based on last years results Nick Cassidy is better than Newgarden too.......

Plus all drivers have to pay a sliding scale on previous years championship position ontop of flat fee to get the superlicence. In 2010 Jenson Button had to pay $1,200,000 for his license. So even the simple act of how much the licenses cost is a retarded biased and unfair system. No wonder F1 is fucked.

How come people thought that he would test negative just week later?

And how's hus actual condition? Since there's no news about that, I assume he's not badly ill If at all.

98% of cases are mild. I'm sure Perez falls into that.

Mild or not, it doesn't go away in week.

Which is why our idiot governments seven days to quarantine after a positive test was always stupid. I guess tRacing Point were hoping that would be the case.
