Overdriving and running into people.

Last year I was still cheering for McLaren, because, well, Vandoorne. And Alonso is a living legend so I wanted both of them to have some luck.
This year I can't be bothered, the iconic team is no more. Let them struggle at the back, I don't care.

I do rate Lando as a talent, but tbh unless he can do a Lewis and find somewhere to jump ship to at exactly the right time, it's a bit career graveyard tbh

I also expect Mclaren to actually have a better year than before (at the very least they'll have more of a budget to spend on the car instead of tied up in the star driver...) but even being midfield fighting with Haas and Renaults isn't really befitting of Mclaren's history.

I wish very hard that Ferrari can remain as competitive this year. Because that will certainly mean Leclerc challenges Lewis for the title.

Bottas and the Redbulls seem like they will be a non-factor at this point, and Vettel's confidence will only erode further every time he gets beaten by Leclerc in pure speed - which will happen eventually.

the ferrari is set-up and designed for vettel's driving style (bias towards understeer) which will probably take leclerc some time to adapt to. vettel is still top dog at ferrari and until that changes the car will always be more suited for him.

that said, i'm looking forward to leclerc embarrassing vettel at ferrari the way ricciardo did at redbull

Yeah, I found myself cheering for Russell once the F2 season moved on. Norris was touted so badly I thought he'll do much better but he left me very disappointed. I wouldn't be surprised if Russell has his measure in F1.

Its probably a PR thing. Lando was billed as the next Lewis so had that pressure on him
George had no pressure on him so anything he could achieve was a bonus

The fact us due to the clutch issues lando didnt get a fair run at the title so really the jury is still out.
How driving for McLaren is going to help him prove himself is anyone's guess, however

I didn't watch every race of the F2 season...but the races that I did watch Lando was seemingly always being passed back in 5th - 6th position while Russell was either at or near the front. Maybe I just watched Lando's crap races but I wasn't all that impressed.

Got me thinking, who were the hyped young drivers that were going to take over F1 and then failed to deliver? Off the top of my head can think of Stoffel Vandoorne and Jan Magnussen. Jarno Trulli after Austria 1997 for a while there was considered to be the next best thing. Alex Wurz was also considered to be a next top talent.

Norris is the second coming of Nico Rosberg. A time trialler from the front in the dry and not that great when back in the field.

Heidlfeld had more hype than Lewis when he came into the sport.
Frentzen was billed as faster than Schumacher too.

The hype can be overwhelming sometimes, mick Schumacher's pr need to be very aware of this

The Frentzen thing was funny because he got the 1997 Williams and only won a single race

Button was overhyped too when he joined F1. The list can be long.
Frentzen was a very good driver and deserved a title just as much as Button did, had the conditions worked in his favour like they did in Button's.

There's no shortage of very, very fast and talented drivers in all disciplines. F1 is just a special kind of breed that you can only detect when you put them in an actual F1 cockpit, on a regular season race week-end, and they start setting things on fire (Kimi, Schumacher, Hamilton, etc... all lived up to the hype, because they just "had" it)

Jos Verstappen can be added to that list as well. Won German F3, set impressive times during an Arrows test in 1993. Dropped into F1 too soon due to Letho getting injured.
At one point Willy Weber wanted to manage him but Jos stuck with his manager. I wonder how things could have turned out if he did switch however as Rothengarter did hurt his career as well.

I think a lot of people said that as he broke Senna's British F3 record.

It all depends in which team youare. Had Hamilton started in a Sauber, and then after two promising seasons had gone to Renault, he could have been another one in the list of promising but not performing.

I always felt sorry for Heidfeld. Whilst Kimi had a good debut season, considering his age and inexperience, I think that Heidfeld had outperformed him enough to earn a McLaren seat ahead of him.

I also think that Heidfeld could have won in Montreal 2008. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but wasn't Heidfeld one stopping and Kubica stopped twice? Heidfeld had to let Kubica through at one point, as Kubica was running lighter. If Heidfeld had held him up for an extra lap or two, he would have been ahead when Kubica made his final stop. And it was very difficult to overtake in those cars...

I think you have 2 categories.

1: Promising but not performing: like Jan Magnussen
2: Promising but bad luck and/or bad decisions: Like Jean Alesi.

With your example Hamilton would be in group 2 as I still think his talent would show.

Heidfeld also had zero personality and little visibility. No shine, no drama, no spectacle.

Heck, even if you can't outperform everyone all the time, or if you're in mediocre equipment to battle with anyone, at least be flamboyant at the wheel! Make the highlights reel, put some rubber on the damn racetrack, win the crowd! I'm pretty sure it matters more than it seems.
