Hockenheimring

f1.com wrote:
The original Hockenheim circuit was built in 1939 as a high-speed test track for Mercedes-Benz, who needed a venue to test for the Tripoli Grand Prix. It was almost eight kilometres long and was formed of two long, curved straights with a long corner at either end.

When war broke out the construction was halted and in the post-war years the Nurburgring became the venue for Formula One racing in Germany, with Hockenheim hosting a few smaller events. When a plan to build an autobahn through the circuit was approved, the government supplied Hockenheim with a large sum by way of compensation. This money was used to build a new track, the now famous Hockenheim circuit, which cut through the forest before looping into the wonderful stadium section around which large grandstands were erected.

In 1968 Hockenheim hit the headlines when Jim Clark was killed there in an F2 race. Nevertheless, with the Nurburgring quickly becoming outdated, Formula One racing came to the track in 1970. Once the Nurburgring had been modernised, however, the sport returned there, leaving Hockenheim with national and F2 events.

But after Niki Lauda suffered horrific burns at the Nurburgring in 1976, Hockenheim became the home of the German Grand Prix. It too, however, was not without dangers. In 1980 Patrick Depailler was killed in testing at the track, and a chicane was put in to break up the fast Ostkurve, while in a 1982 crash Ferrari's Didier Pironi suffered terrible injuries to his legs.

In 2002 the long runs through the forest were done away with and the layout of the track was heavily modified. Despite arguments that it had lost some of its character, the first race at the new circuit was deemed a great success and the venue has remained a regular feature on the F1 calendar ever since.

And with the success in recent years of local heroes Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel - and, of course, the Mercedes team - the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim has become one of the most atmospheric races of the season, with the noise from fans in the stadium section being almost deafening at times.

Hockenheim is dead to me. The races on the old fast blast through the forest may have been dull, but at least they were different and fast and beautiful and unique. Now it feels like any other generic Tilkedrome. :(

Absolutely agree, but at least it has some good races from time to time.

The race here in 2000 is easily one of my favourites.

I seem to be one of the very few that doesn't mind the "new" Hockenheim. The old one tended to be a Noah's Ark engine race with little impact from the driver, unless they were running 40kg less fuel or it was wet.

The new one allows for passing and keeps the cars together very well.

With today's regulations, teams being closer together, draggy cars, and DRS zones on every single straight, the old layout would provide the best race of the year easily. You'd have a tight pack of 6 cars followed by a tight pack of 14.

No way anyone would build a gap without being caught by DRS and multi-drafting. Though you'd need to give everyone an extra engine just for this race.

Heck, make it a 400km race and call it the Hockenheim 400. Make it the highlight of the season. If only Bernie had sold F1 to the Americans three decades ago.

I can only imagine Formula 3 there, especially that really bad season with Stroll et. al.

Why isn't F2 racing? That just makes no sense to me.

I always thought that the old forest section was a bit narrow, now for those cars could have been a pain in the ass for overtaking

at least it was good for like 5 DRS zones and expectations of Monza 71, but actually being Monza F3 race instead

I see they've positioned that second DRS activation zone juuuuuuuust far enough down the 'straight' to hopefully ensure the passes have to be completed under braking into the corner rather than 200m before it.

Of course, it may also be juuuuuuuuust far enough down the 'straight' to ensure it simply allows the car behind to get marginally closer without allowing them to overtake.

maybe because it was a unique track that provided good racing in other categories than f1?

The old track was something unique. Not just another bland F1 spec race track.

IMO,the new track has no character.

the new track is not bad. it's only problem is that it will always be compared with the original layout.

Every year they hold the race in Hockenheim I read the same old "I miss the old layout"

I watched a few races on the old layout and they sucked, except for 2000 which was helped by the weather and a lunatic.

Why do people keep harping on about it? Yeah maybe with DRS it be different but that's in the realm of fantasy now.

I miss the old layout 8)

The old track was unique and all the Tilke projects seem very similar tbh. The current layout is soulless :yuk:

This is the issue. The "new" track would be accepted well if it was built from scratch.

My memory is fading, but IIRC the race there in 2014 (or about that time) was one of the best DRS era races we've had, there was no weather or safety cars (except on lap 1) to make it happen.

All I can remember was the first 20-30 laps was insanely action packed.

Lewis had to fight through the field from the back as Mercedes forgot to put his brakes on in qualy, leading to quite a big wreck
IIRC he wasn't the only one out of position, which led to a nice early segment of the race as people made the moves

Lewis made a nice 3 wide move at one point and I remember having to argue with someone on a podcast about how they said he shouldn't have done it because he has a championship to think about and that's why he is a worse driver than nico because he doesn't use his head and blah blah blah
Sometimes, he can do no right :p

And TBH I'm surprised the thread went down the same "RIP Hockenheim 1932-2001" as all the other have ever done in history since 2002
Someone dig up the thread from Original TBK for the first race on the new track, I bet it's exactly the goddamn same :D

(In looking up the date for the RIP quote, I found out the Hockenheimring was originally built in 1932 by Christ. lolololol
I'm not kidding, look it up )

Anyway, yeah I was surprised about F2 and GP3 not being there too, but hopefully there'll be more accessible live streams from F4 and PLZ SOMEONE show me Euroboss omg! :8:

The old track wasn't that boring I think, I remember I always looked forward for this race. It has provided many incidents and spectacular crashes. Especially in the chicanes. Also there was a race where almost everyone got no fuel in the end (1986).
