Just noticed that we don't have a thread for this year.

I'll start! Pascal Wehrlein is reported to have agreed terms with Sauber for a drive this year, which all-but-confirms Bottas to Mercedes. That, and the fact that 'sources' report that Valtteri visited Brackley before Christmas for a seat fitting.

unless Wolff comes up with something very surprising, can't see Bottas and his 77 anywhere than in a Merc

Will be interesting to see how Bottas (TBC) will handle the pressure by Hamilton. So far he hasn't driven against a world class team mate. Massa and Maldonado were quick occasionally but prone to crashes. It was easier to shine against them. Hamilton, on the other hand, will destroy anyone (unless his mind starts wandering). Valtteri is known to be a very cautious driver, but will he be making more mistakes if he tries to outperform Lewis?

Then again, if Mercedes is just as dominant as before, Bottas knows he'll be the first car to win if Hamilton faces problems.

According to the rumors, Bottas should be confirmed tomorrow, Massa the day after.

Why is Wehrlein's number not confirmed? I thought it's always linked to the driver through his career, champion can take #1 if he wants, but no other changes is allowed, correct? Wehrlein should drive number 94 Sauber.

I might be going to the pre season tests again this year, was great fun last year and with plane tickets and hotel included, still cheaper than raceweekend in Francorchamps.

This season will be worse than 2016.

But thanks to Stoffel, I have something to look forward to.

Him retiring probably

The whole Wehrlein / Bottas / Mercedes / Massa / Williams thing makes me laugh, all the upcoming talent or already established drivers their is ready to jump into an F1 seat (JEV, Buemi etc) , yet F1 teams only seem interested in clinging onto seasoned veterans or signing pay drivers.

People who think the new rules are gonna change anything racing-wise are crazy. They are gonna be going so fast and the wake is gonna be so huge, it'll be like 2007 again.

He works for McAfee, I mean Intel Security, I mean McAfee, or whatever.

Don't be so hard on him, not his fault his company keeps distracting him with non-important tasks!

Turbulence (more critical than wake size) won't be as big as it was then without the winglets. DRS plugs the gap the any increased wake cause. People are saying DRS is too effective, well it might be less effective in 2017.

You made a comparison to 2007, yet 2008 was no different, and for me was the most exciting season I've seen.

The cars are now going to be aero limited as opposed to power limited, which means Mercedes dominance is gone. Mercedes dominance has been the worst factor for F1 in the last 2 years.

And I'm not crazy, mum tells me daily I'm not.

Yes, now we have Red Bull dominance instead of Mercedes dominance, and whatever you say about Mercedes, at least they let their drivers race each other.

Who'll be the first one here moaning when Red Bull start playing favourites with their wunderkind and yet again screw over the Aussie? :p

(Also IMO, the years when F1 has been an engine formula instead of an aerodynamic formula are the ones where it has been the most interesting. Give me tyres, give me engines, hell give me anything instead of overtaking-ruining aerodynamics any day.
The cars might look good in 2017, but that'll last maybe 1 season before the engineers find a trick, stepped nose style, to ugly-fy them again too. Or when it comes to the engine fins returning, they might already be heading down that road)

Newey has been doing more with the car now that the aero rules have been opened up again. More chance to innovate.

Well, it still might be Mercedes dominance. According to some rumors, Mercedes asked some clarification on suspension rules (probably related to e-FRIC or what ever they call it).

FIA/Whiting gave the clarifications just before Christmas and it is said to make Red Bull's system illegal.

Last season Red Bull had "dynamic suspension travel" system, which tilted the cars from positive rake towards negative on straights, which decreases the wing angle and gives more straightline speed. Kinda what IndyCar used to do because of their wing angles were fixed to some minimum by the rules.

Funny how that system combines the rake adjustment that I demonstrated in this topic years ago:

Hey Red Bull, I want my share from your last years revenues, you darn idea thiefs!

So yeah, get ready for Merc 1-2 again, their rule bending e-FRIC is legal thanks for abusing vanity panel rule and Manor using 2014 chassis in 2015 with added part on the front. The only hope now is that Ferrari has used bonkers amount of cash to copy that idea as other teams are probably not going to do so because the Mercedes system is only going to be illegal for 2018 season.

We are 'McAfee by Intel Security' at the moment. Just McAfee soon. Obviously while snipers watch for John McAfee...

They've been doing it for years, using brake bias and setting the suspension soft at the front to achieve this.

Last time we had sweeping aero changes a little team could Brawn pulled a fast one on us, so there is no way anyone can positively say someone will be dominant. Williams, Renault, Force India heck even Sauber (doubtful) could have something brewing that could fast track them to the front.

+1 on both points. Red Bull's crazy rake setup has been a fundamental part of their car concept since 2010-ish.

Also I think that one of the other teams is going to jump up the order. Maybe not to the front, but this sort of unexpected leap always happens when there are big chassis or aero changes. A third of the grid has a top engine already, so all they need is a breakthrough elswhere.
