Not that old but considering the age he raced in he more than double some of his competitors.

Oh man, that's shit news. Lovely chap; I had the honour of meeting him a few times at Goodwood and A1Gp. He was so friendly and happy to chat to fans. Monster on a bike or in a car.

RIP

It's weird, I was doing a screenshot of Grand Prix Legends last night and looking through the drivers in the game, thinking Surtees is more or less the only one left (I could be wrong on some of the lesser-known names) and now he's gone :-(

Uh maybe I'm in the minority maybe not, but this is racing. Racing and especially f1 shouldn't necessarily be a development ground for road cars. If it works out that some tech developed in racing can be applied to road cars, fine, but that's not the purpose of racing.

that's from your spectator point of view. But you have to consider the constructors point of view.
There are brands like mercedes, renault, fiat, honda involved, they don't want to spend millions of dollars to develop something that is pointless in the market.

Tell that to ford and ferrari regarding their 1960s-70s Le Mans efforts.

another interesting fact is that John Surtees was the dean of world champions for both F1 and MotoGP (for the bikes, the oldest champion alive is Phil Read)

If it's true about Ferrari having the fastest car this year (lol) that sucks more than if it's Mercedes, because at least Mercedes let their drivers race each other.

Yea, it'll be interesting to see what will happen if Kimi is doing really well and whether Vettel will pull a few strings to get his way, I can't see Kimi abiding to much of it though

According to David Croft the electrical problems McLaren have had this week seem to be caused because the engine is generating significantly more vibration than expected & it's causing some of the electrical connections to loosen.

There down on power anyway but it currently looks worse than it probably is as they are having to run lower revs to reduce the vibration to do more miles. On top of that the drivability of the engine is apparently pretty bad.

It's looking pretty dire for McLaren-Honda. To be honest they should be much farther along than they are and for that, they are in an even shittier position than in 2015.

I had a look through Wikipedia and counted that 13 drivers who took part in the 1967 F1 championship season are still kicking. Only 4 of those were in GPL though and only 9 actually drove F1 cars.

Why don't they just put that engine in a Nippon chassis and test the shit out of it. Or, an old Mclaren chassis? Or is that not allowed anymore? A dyno is great, but any real life work is so much more valuable.

As far as I'm aware, there's nothing to stop them from doing that. Especially could have done that before entering F1 and gain a huge advantage.
