I think he was in contention for the second seat at one point.

For the 1994 seat Luca Badoer and JJ Lehto were tested and in contention for the seat, with Lehto getting the nod. I remember Alboreto testing but don't remember why.

I've found a eulogy-type article from Motorsport which mentions a Benetton test at the end of '93 which didn't amount to anything:

The caption said it is a B193B, but it most definitely is not.

That's a B191 nose cone (and probably the rest of the car, unless it is a bastardised show car) and a 1993 livery.

Benetton were a favourite of mine when I was a kid. I loved the colourful liveries and cars

I used to have a toy model of the B189, the colorful livery was part of my childhood

but I still like the yellow liveries more than others

It is indeed a whole B191 masquerading as a 1993 car.

I love the 'what did they paint as this year's car' game. I once argued in public with a complete stranger who couldn't grasp that putting the 1998 West paint job on a 1996 McLaren didn't make it the 1998 car.

While they look similar the B192 and B193 cars are different. It's just the differences are subtle.

On the B193 the nose the slightly higher, the bodywork over the rear end is extended and there's the barge boards. Add to that the active suspension and narrower track, hence the bumps on the front just above where the front suspension connects to the chassis.

I've always loved the 1990 to 1994 Benettons. Too bad we didn't get to see more from Alessandro Nannini there. Same with Roberto Moreno. And I'm sure Alboreto wouldn't have done any worse than Patrese did in 1993 and certainly better than Lehto, Verstappen, etc in 1994.

Oh I get that the bodywork is different; I mean the monocoque itself. The cockpit opening and odd lip running below it could be dismissed as consistent design themes, but the bump for the gearstick is a dead giveaway IMHO. Unless the B193 was originally designed to have a stick, there is no reason for it to be there:

gkmotorsport - I don't think I'd noticed that bump before. And now looking back, it's also on the B189, B190 and B191.

Also started looking up other cars of that era, this one also has the bump
