Poor JWT, now his retirement announcement is just an afterthought, much like his racing career.

Holy fuck, what is going on? One of the biggest shock retirements in the sports history...The way no one commentating on it I think means either its a medical/family issue or he didn't want to be apart of the circus that is NASCAR anymore.

No way. Carl is the Nascar circus' ringmaster and literal pony in their dog and pony show.

I've been away from this place too long, evidently.

Hey now, we're a self respecting bunch. We don't want to repeat the same old joke and beat a dead horse... Just a retired one.

Guys, quit foaling around.

I don't mean to be a neighsayer, but Carl was always a bit whinny. He had a pretty stable career though, guess it's time he hang up the reins. I just hope its not health-related, that always stirrups the emotions. It wont be furlong before we find out.

Tom Jensen already stated that a source close said it's not health related but basically Carl woke up one day and decided fuck it.

So the jokes may roll on.... unlike any sort of crimson tide.

Edwards retiring saddens me because we'll have to put all the horse jokes out to pasture.

He'll be back anxiously regurgitating to get his cup.

Anyway, the way he lost those 2 years has to mess up with you. He probably just taking a well deserved break.

I'm also his fan, as that Atlanta sweep in 2005 was one of the first things I saw on the same weekend that happened. And I also have the problem of being very sweet on the camera but thinking nasty things on my head. Hence I only got it out of my system on that faithfull Texas chase race where Gordon lost the title. But was mad about some things ever since I got here, 11 years ago....

Maybe he'll end up in the NBC commentary booth - who can he replace?

Stewart and Edwards leaving at the same time. This is the biggest advancement in driver safety since HANS and SAFER were implemented.

He has been the most vocal about cutting downforce and making the cars harder to drive. I dig that but otherwise, I have no idea what his thoughts on the Chase and other such things are.

His temper won't be missed but his anti-downforce opinion will.

Carl Edwards has Retired?

More importantly, have you seen the front end of Newman's car??

I'll quote Clark Griswold from Christmas Vacation to sum up my reaction to Carl Edwards' sudden retirement when I saw the news this morning.

"I could have woken up with my head sewn to the carpet and I wouldn't be more surprised than I am right now."

I've always liked Carl because he's a fellow Missourian and he paid his dues to get to where he got in the sport. He was given a chance by the Mittler Brothers and turned that chance into quite a career.

Carl was one of the most intense (not always smart) competitors out there. He provided two of the best finishes last year (PHX-RIR) and the biggest moment of the Chase. Losing him is a blow to the personality of the sport, and the competition. Same with the loss of Tony. Thus, the sport get's more vanilla by the day. Make fun of him all you want but I know as a fan of racing I'll miss his dynamic.
