Get out of jail free card for Merc today. Both drivers had poor starts and yet Rosberg was handed the win by the red flag. Shame for Vettel and Kimi, both did a great job and had better results taken away by circumstances beyond their control.

Bianchi's Marussia also had a great deal of damage as the roll hoop was ripped away

Indeed, that rollhoop flicked to the side of the car reminded me of Pedro Diniz Sauber.

I wonder how many secrets were revealed to other teams in the McLaren wreckage? It's amazing to see how little space the engine occupies, the back area of the car that used to be engine in 80s/90s is now exhaust pipes and bodywork!

Come to think of it, it's been a long while since we've been able to describe a McLaren as flying.

I'm not sure if it's already been said in here because I can be bothered going through 15 pages of forum. But the only reason turn 3 was tarmac in 2006 was because it was thought to be easier to get to the swim centre for the Commonwealth games. Basically which is across from where Alonso's car came to rest. Albert Park is parklands with cricket and soccer grounds everywhere so I highly doubt those gravel traps will go.

how are the rules if your engine/gearbox is broken because of a crash? Does that count for the number of 'engine units' or whatever it is called these days?

Case of stiff shit isn't it?

Also would anyone else not be surprised at all if Alonso's crash has made him make up his mind and walk away from F1? I mean, I can't blame him at all if his thought process is "why put my life on the line in another shit box for 12th position, if I was challenging for the lead and world championships then that risk might be acceptable, and that's not going to happen anytime soon, so what's the point"

I think these guys just love what they do, whether it is for 1st or 12th position.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if he was chatting it over with Webber that very night.

Had the same thoughts regarding Alonso. Three life-threatening crashes in about a year or so, at a late age as far as F1 goes, in a car that's been nothing but frustration with no hope of having a glance at the podium.

If he leaves Mclaren before the end of the contract, he would have been at only one team where he left on kinda okay terms. Not really a person you want in a wec factory team

It's all speculation for now.

Alonso himself stated that he wants to find out how the 2017 cars will be (more important: how McLaren will perform) and that he'll decide his future after that.

if they didn't counted damaged units due to crash you could expect drivers from top teams crashing like Jos Verstappen in the end of the races if they weren't in the points

just to scrap out that unit in favour of a newer one

So apparently the gearbox and engine survived the crash.

$300,000 damage!

Remind me to get very good insurance coverage if I'm ever handed an F1 for a joy ride

To be honest, I'm a bit shocked that it's not more. I think the cars are probably worth about $1m each so  also respect that the engine survived that!
