What a joke

I hope it's a complete farce in Melbourne and a lot goes wrong.

So have they allocated more tyres to Q3? These current tyres only get 1 real fast lap out of them for qualifying unless certain track conditions prevail. So unless they GAIN performance the longer they run, Q3 is going to be a boring shit show.

I'm just trying to go through this logically.

The session is 14 minutes long with a driver eliminated after 5 minutes in Q3. There are 8 cars.
The drivers have to do an out lap, fast lap and then an in lap which takes a MINIMUM of about 3 minutes. More like 3 and half to 4. Someone may try and risk 2 laps. So if the drivers are eliminated on the cut off time REGARDLESS of if they are on a current lap the key is finishing the lap BEFORE the cut off time rather than STARTING the lap before the cut off time as is currently...so realistically after that first cut off time everyone bar the Mercs (unless one of them flufs the first lap) will need to be continuously circulating? on more degraded tyres? All the while having a dwindling car count? So realistically the first and second laps will probably decide pole.

My gravest fear is that something unexpected happens and the powers that be praise the system and we are stuck with it.

But the times don't reset. Only going from q1 to q2. Right?

Let's wait and see. It's not really racing anymore, so a clown circus would be funny to watch.

I wonder if it will change much. The Mercedes cars will do an early banker lap that's enough to get them to the next part of qualy, maybe a faster lap later on to be sure.

No chance in hell they would revolt. Interests are to big.

Of course not. Only in the rare circumstances that create chaos in today's sessions as well

Man, that Ferrari turbo is so present compared to last year. I think the 2016 unit sounds better as well

Video doesn't want to work so maybe FOM got to it already

But damn, that's horrible. This must be stopped before it gets out of hand and F1 cars look like WEC's uglier little brothers. :(

So did Ferrari run this thing on their own without the FIA's initial consent, or were the FIA aware of this?

I ask this, because I find it odd that both the public airing of this Halo and the qualifying rules from out of know where aren't somehow connected, in that they knew that this Halo concept would be one of the most dismissive concepts in recent memory as it is fundamentally altering the fabric and history of the sport.

Are the dumb as door nails qualifying rules just a smoke screen to deflect away from the Halo to buy time for the concept to be out there in the open and be more likely to be embraced? Has Bernie written all over it.

why not make a hybrid of the halo and the canopy? just make a structure with a windshield, but an open top. could look better than that and still be safe

How about learning the drivers some respect for each other and spectators/marshalls. There is something as 'too much', even with safety. And we're talking about driver safety. Safety of the marshalls or spectators seems to be on nobody's mind when talking about safety. And yes, with 'too much' safety, the next Marco Campos or Jeff Krosnoff will fly into a crowd, because drivers are getting bolder or even reckless.

They overshot the mark. Consider that in F3 a race weekend was cancelled because of a lack of driving standards. Maldonado wouldn't have survived the road to f1 years ago. And if he would have, his license would have been revoked ten times over.

That would actually be a good solution, IMO.

I agree with this, it did bother me when people described Jules' death as the first since Senna, thereby ignoring the 3 marshals that have lost their lives in the intervening years.
(Ok the one in canada wasn't as a direct result of an F1 car, but still, they all gave up their lives because of the sport and they aren't even getting paid for the risk either...)

I believe that's the Red Bull proposal which they plan to test next month.
