It seems that a lot of people are complaining about it being hard to pass the leader, and then bringing up the early 2000's plate races. If I remember correctly, the early to mid 2000's plate races had a top-5 breakaway where the leader couldn't really be passes either. I distinctly remember the DEI cars being unpassable back then.

I'm just saying that if you take away the nostalgia, there weren't too many great plate finishes from the early 2000's. There was some great pack racing and they were fun to watch, but if you took those cars with that package and raced them yesterday, the result wouldn't have been all that different.

Also, tandems can fuck right off.

People have gotten way too spoiled/entitled and it's due to a lot of the gimmicky rules (GWC) and aero packages that have come along in the last 10-15 years. The roof fin was a response to the poor racing at the 2000 Daytona 500, which IIRC was more of a rear shock issue. So that created somewhat cheap and inflated passes. They got back to a good package (IMO) for the last few years after they removed the fins but before the CoT came along. Then the CoT was basically a super-inflated version of the Gen5 roof fin because they had a ton more drag and the passes (though interesting) were pretty much meaningless. Look I know the restrictor plates themselves bring the field artificially close but there's still a balance to be found between making it impossible to hold the lead ( http://racing-reference.info/race/2010_Aaron's_499/W ), and impossible to take the lead (ARCA). I also like that handling matters. It's what made both the 2007 Daytona races to badass.

I thought it was a totally fair block in the context of plate racing. It's just hard to pull that off on old tires.

I mean, we got through a plate race without an asinine bullshit finish, and without thinking someone might have died.

I'm content with that.

Me too. Hamlin was the only one with the balls to make something happen on the white flag. Doubt Martin would have rocked the new JGR affiliated boat, and Kyle waited too long. The finish was one of the best. Sure the laps leading up to it were bland but I'm realizing more that RP races are usually boring as a whole. Earnhardt era RP races of the 90s are straight up painful to watch. Imo they have it figured out more now than they did then.

Hey it was a race. You want to win, finish 1st. I saw nothing wrong with the racing and zero with how the final lap played out. For those bitching about lead changes, the 1998 500 had 13 lead changes.

Yeah, it was going to be a 9/10 race already if Kenseth led all the way for me, just for having a calm green finish that didn't had a caution in the last 10 laps. That's rare.

Second-lowest Daytona 500 ratings since they began broadcasting the full-race in 1979. John Cena was a fitting celebrity guest for the 500, because nobody saw this race.

NASCAR is gonna have to pay Dale Jr. to keep racing James Hylton style, cause when Jr. Nation bails it'll be game over.

How many lead changes did the 2000 500 have? I just remember that being the 500 that Dale Jarrett dominated, yet, Johnny Benson nearly stole it at the end by staying out on a late caution and it took the whole field ganging up on him in order for him to get passed by DJ.

All NASCAR needs, but the only way he's quitting is if he dies...

It was a ridiculous 9 lead changes for the 500. The Shootout had 4 lead changes, the 1st Twin 125 had 1 and the 2nd 125 had 0. That's 14 TOTAL lead changes for all of 2000 Speedweeks.

Also, about the ratings, that doesn't include streaming and internet tv correct? Just wondering because half of my friends don't have your run of the mill cable anymore. I'd expect the numbers to continuously drop if they don't count certain services.

I think they count it as just normal TV and cable TV. They might add the FSGO streaming now as well but I am not sure (they didn't have the actual race broadcast anyway, just a non commentary feed and onboards I believe).

meanwhile ARCA is up in ratings again this year, they pulled over a million viewers
