They have been using that no-chicane configuration for many years now and I think also with cars with much higher top speed (pre 2011).

Pretty sure the only reason they're allowed to run the track in that config is spectators are banned from the area, so absolute worst case scenario if a tyre punctures at top speed through the corner and it takes off.....well it would be horrible but worst case scenario we'd lose 1 driver and not a le mans 55 style disaster you're probably thinking of.

I'm sure if audi gave out that oppurtunity to any driver there'd be quite a queue, that sorta risk is what gets the average racing driver up in the morning, so I imagine the chosen few that have got to run top speed around monza without the chicane consider themselves very very lucky indeed, both for the experience and that they came home in one piece afterwards

Gotta do it once in your life though eh guys :)

What is the top speed approaching and through Curva Grande without the chicane? 235mph on entrance to the corner? They're not lifting (doesn't sound like it anyway) so 225+ through to exit?

More like 210 on entry. They haven't done 370kph+ at Le Mans since the chicanes were added.

I heard people claiming 340kmh through Curva Grande(I guess somebody there used a radar gun. Maybe the Italian guy who films this every year)

A year or two ago the uploader (Bozzy) claimed some ridiculous number too in the clickbaiting video title which ended up being a guess or at least based on some pretty questionable calculation :whistling:

For these new post-2014 low drag cars 340 km/h sounds at least plausible.

While watching the video of Audi testing the new Le Mans spec R18 at Monza I noticed that the rear view mirrors are gone. They must have found a new solution for it, maybe something similar to what Peugeot did with the 905 in the early 90s.

Was just gonna post this picture. Not sure if the driver could actually see from those mirrors, but aerodynamically it's incredibly clever.

Impressive ideas with the mirrors to maximise aero gain. I wonder if it works like the idea of F1 having mirrors on the side pods in the past.
