Though I'm not a fan of the image he's trying to create for himself and I definitely don't need to see him in his underpants, I do think it's good that drivers stand out from the rest and have some personality.

F1 drivers are so bland these days. I wish we could have the James Hunt personalities back again.

Am I the only one who finds these sleeve tattoos by modern sports stars in all disciplines pathetic? I have no problems with people getting tattoo's but I find the whole getting the sleeve to be the exact opposite of individualism that I guess people think. I actually find it bland and conformist as fuck,especially in modern sports when it seems every man and his dog is getting them. They are the new barb wire tattoo craze of the early 2000s.

The end of Imola 2005 was great with the Schumacher/Alonso battle, Rest of the race was fairly uneventful & the same was true the following year (Only 1 on track overtake in the 2006 race according to the clip the apex stats).

It also reminds me of a part of why I hated refueling, Schumacher went from 10th to 3rd without having to overtake anyone on the track, He just kinda sat back & waited for everyone infront to pit & then ended up ahead of them after his own stop.
I know that sort of thing can still happen today but back when we had refueling passing in the pits rather than on track happened far more often & at times it seemed like drivers were intentionally not trying to pass the car infront knowing they had a better fuel strategy.

The other thing I remember about that race was ITV taking an Ad-break with 3 laps to go & then having to apologize & replay the final few laps after the podium & the complaints that generated forcing an Ofcom investigation.


The other thing of note from that weekend was that it was the launch of GP2 & the 1st time we got to see the brilliant racing the Dallara GP2/05 was able to produce.

The ITV ad break was pretty bad.

I think that Imola race was the most extreme example of the "Trulli Train"

I recall the GP2 cars had major problems with standing starts at Imola. I need to watch the video later.

While I agree the end of the 2005 was pretty intense and enjoyable to watch, it was also a total buzzkill as it was extremely obvious Schumi was never going to be able to overtake Alonso. Same with the 2006 race when it was the other way around. Since the 2005 race I've always wondered why we all got so excited.

That was the final nail in the coffin for Ide's F1 career as the FIA revoked his super license a few days later.

ah 2006 the season I started complaining about boring races

it was the same season that they started the elimination qualifying instead of that great format that didn't allowed tv to go to ad break and the lap had to be perfect

Funny thing about Ide is that, if I'm not mistaken, he's a very respected and accomplished driver on Japanese motorsport.

He is, He finished 2nd in the Formula Nippon championship in 2005 & Aguri Suzuki picked him for the F1 team based off what he'd seen of him in Japan.


I've always felt that Ide was probably a much better driver than his time in F1 showed.

He was thrown in & was always going to fail as he had no F1 experience, Did no proper running before Bahrain, Had never been to Europe so had no idea about the different cultures, Had never driven on any of the circuits apart from Suzuka (And possibly Sepang in SuperGT) & also spoke no English which made communicating with the engineer's a pain as everything had to go through a Japanese speaking member of the team.

If Aguri Suzuki wanted 2 Japanese drivers he should have looked at Satoshi Motoyama who won the Formula Nippon championship 3 times by then & who had driven an F1 car before for Jordan & Renault & been reasonably quick.

Although everyone was raving during and after the race about the close finish, I just couldn't get excited about it during the race because A) it was imola and B) the aero at the time made most races boring, let along a butchered Imola that didn't let any series let its cars get a run on one another.

Then ITV went on it's random ad break and I assume they thought likewise, might as well get on with the important adverts during the last lap before all the post race ceremonies

Saying that, I'm sure the racing would be better at Imola now under the new tyre rules and without the final chicane.

Blue balls, hory shet etc. I miss the sound, the drivers, the graphics. We had some bonkers races even though the field was spread out for the most, hard to pass. The on track battles got me excited couple of years back - I don't get that sense nowadays.

F1 with the driver aids was shite except perhaps in 2003.
