Interesting seeing the rise of young Canadian driver Lance Stroll, he won the Italian F4 championship last season, is currently leading the Toyota Racing Series here in NZ, he's a Ferrari young driver and has just signed on to Prema for the European F3 season, but I think one of the biggest factors is that his family are wealthy..... very very wealthy as in his dad is a Billionaire, so not only does this kid seem to have the talent but also the cash to make it to F1

Quote:
The Geneva-based billionaire brought a huge, million-dollar camper-home to travel between his son's events.

He can afford the outlay thanks to a fortune earned in the fashion world, masterminding the rise of popular labels including Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors.

Stroll has a reputation for flashy purchases - he owns more than 20 Ferraris, including a rare 1967 model for which he paid US$27.5 million (NZ$36.5m) and a race track near Quebec to drive them on.

A $50m apartment in New York was a recent purchase and he has been rumoured to be in talks with McLaren and Sauber about buying into a Formula One team.

I just caught round 3 of the Toyota Racing Series on Foxtel in Oz, and man, that series is awesome. Cars look great, action aplenty, great racing and a truly international field.

Stroll did impress me, but I was more impressed with the Frenchman Brandon Maisano & the Indian Arjun Maini. But if Stroll does get rides because of his wealth he actually is pretty good, so its a vastly different situation with a Chilton type.

Spoiler:
He's just won the TRS series with a race to spare and also now won the season ending New Zealand Grand Prix

BAR tried that in '99 (although it was the same sponsor) but it wasn't allowed.

I know and even back then it was an outdated rule.
They argue that fans wont know what car their favorite driver is in if you have all different paintjobs several times a year.

If you have a favorite driver, you follow him enough to see the previews before the race and know what car he's in. Even them dumb rednecks understand it so us ubersmart Europeans should get it easily

Sure, it would be the same, cause F1 has the same amount of space for the car number and driver name than Nascar does.

If you follow f1 enough you pick out your favorite driver and hen he has a special paintjob. If you follow f1 a bit you don't care if they have different paintjobs.

Stop using stupid excuses

How do they define 'different paintschemes' anyway? At least since the mid 90s teammates always had different colors of nose cones, end plates or mirrors. Or even different advertisement on the wing i think. So how different can different be? And what would be the consequences? Point deduction? A fine? A bribe to uncle Bernie?

And what about Red Bull. They had a special Star Wars or Superman livery. Or the one with many little photos. Or the white one for Coulthard for his last GP, whilst the second Red Bull car had usual livery at the same time. I'm pretty sure teams could get an exception to change the livery, but they are just not interested...

you can change the sponsors but not the livery, unless there is an exception approved unanimously by the other teams, like happened with Coulthard last race

but I don't know if that applied in 2006 when Midland became Spyker and changed from red to orange

It probably did, tbh. BAR probably failed to get the unanimous support required due to them coming in with all guns bragging. I dare say they put too many noses out of joint.

That was thanks more to more Craig Pollock than anyone else. Remember that he (and Adrian Reynard) predicted that BAR would win their first GP on the basis that Reynard had won at their first attempt in every other formula and they had Villeneuve. Obnoxious prick.

As obnoxious as they were, they did provide us with I would argue, one of the most spectacular smashes in F1 history. Again JV was beaten by a team mate haha.

I was watching a 1998 GP broadcast and they had Pollock on there and he was bragging about how good the team would be and they didn't score a point
