I'll put this here too... watching the 1995 Winston 500.

This is so much fun to watch. Great racing, and the commentary's fun as hell, too. BP is very clearly enjoying himself in the booth.

Personally, Id' rather have him not interview, then whine and cry in front of a camera.

Yeah, quite a different contrast from today's broadcast where there's more dead air than usual and the commentators clearly don't give a damn.

Well, sometimes, it's better to shut up and be thought of a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt, methinks.

Well, racing was a lot more fun 20 years ago. The on-track product was entertaining, the coverage was great, and the races on ESPN were truly the highlight of the week, what with Bob, Ned and Benny telling us what's going on without insulting our intelligence.

It was kind of a shame when the races ended every weekend.

The problem with NASCAR is not enough people name their kid "Loy" anymore.

By the way, the 800 number Steve Grissom sponsored is still active.

I can't watch the old races. Reminds me too much of everything the racing today isn't. Rose tinted glasses be damned. The racing was much much better 20 years ago.

As for today's race... If I'm looking at it objectively, it was actually a good race. If I look at it in it's totality, which to me means taking into account that the outcomes of the race are directly tied to the points championship in the current manner of win and in or run poorly for a week or two and be straight up eliminated, the race was both great and a farce. It was great in that a guy who had to win to continue, dug deep and did so (really was some aggressive driving by Brad to maintain the lead) and yet was an absolute farce in that the 4 guys who were eliminated had all WON at least one race this year.

With so much apparent focus on winning, it seems asinine to eliminate drivers who have actually done that when drivers who have not done so continue on to battle for the title... A title they can win without actually winning a race. As a matter of fact, it is easier with this format to run consistently and NOT win a race and yet win the title than any other format they've ever used...

I will not be watching Matinsville... I'll be at OCFS for the Eastern States 200.

I hate any version of the Chase as much as anyone else, but championships in sport in general started as a promotional gimmick to market the sport year round, increase competitor numbers and encourage teams/players to show up for all events, not just the ones they'd win. So they could fuck with that all they want and it wouldn't really be against the spirit of a points championship.

Championships are absolutely fine. It's the way in which they are decided that can be fucked up. Playoffs are bullshit.

I was wondering why there was a picture of Stewart with the front end all torn up in the long shadows and front stretch grass. Now I know why! I thought it was part of a different crash he was involved in.

That makes sense. I saw a photo of the cars coming to the finish line and there's debris all over the apron.

Can you imagine if that caused the race to end under yellow and ESPN had no replays for it.
