Hamilton's mistake of 2009, Hakkinen's in 1999 or Coulthard's in 1995... none of these happened at the corner we're discussing. This is about drivers going off at Parabolica through a mistake, not about mistakes at other any of the other corners.

Now I see it was only about the Parabolica.

Still, not many mistakes at this track.

Oh, Parabolica.

Derek Warwick, but that's a long time ago.

Somewhere around 1990 I guess? The barrier was a lot closer to the track back then.

Loads of people go off there during WEC/Blancpain and other GT events.

Doesn't count because he went off everywhere

Brings me to the (slightly off-topic) point that I still want to hear or see what caused his accident with Marcus Mahy at the exit of Stavelot during the 24H of Spa. Mattzel and myself talked about that insane runoff there a few hours before, and I brought up the fact that (to me) that area has gotten way more dangerous because drivers can basically do what they want because they get the impression that they have an infinite amount of space.

Oh yeaa, I do think that the fact you can get away with going off now has had a negative impact. They'll take risks they never would have before, especially the lesser abled drivers.

Part of the challenge of Parabolica was the need to go wide to get the best run down the straight but if you ran too wide the grass sucks you in and you find the kitty litter.

He spun but wasn't that car related? He dropped down the field to fifth I think after that spin.

I thought driver error at first, but seeing this footage makes me think he lost the brakes

Oh yeah that one was definitely problems with the brakes. He carried on but had to brake using the gears for the rest of the race.

If that happened today, would Hakkinen have been allowed to continue on by the team or would he have been ordered to park? Hakkinen managed to find a way to drive around the problem even though he was having severe braking difficulties.
