Because they send the camera operators round the rest of the track away to get some sleep during the night.

I've read before that its due to some EU work laws which they enforce more strictly in France.

The cameras are still there & still filming, The director just chooses not to use them unless they catch something big (The Audi crash in 2011 for instance).


Last year I was watching some SpeedVision coverage of Le Mans from 1998-2001 & back then there was full coverage round the track during the night hours.

This is when the interesting bit begins tbh: Tirelessly staring at laptimes and gaps between cars throughout the night, pretending to be a race engineer. Maybe have an onboard feed or two running.
