Isn't this better than 1 driver based team-ordered dominance.

Please don't fuck this up Mercedes. Let them play mind games, let one side of the garage race the other and undercut to their needs, even if a SC comes out.
Hell, let them fuck up and crash into each other a couple of times....
The sport needs this. WE need this. Don't ruin this with corporate bullshit please.

On track, I think Lewis is the quicker driver. On tracks that suit him (Malaysia, China) we've seen him walk away and we've also seen him win races where he's been at a disadvantage on strategy or that are more "Nico's tracks" (Bahrain, Spain)

However, off track, Nico just might be shrewd enough to outpsyche him and pull this off.
Lewis' hard charging philosphy seems to only apply to on track racing, he never reacts well to off track gamesmanship.
Question his driving, fine. Question him as a person, does not want.

And for the championship, this is fantastic.

However we're now heading off to one of the most "Lewis" tracks of the season so it'll be interesting to see the next chapter of this fascinating story.

No real new surprises here to be honest. I think we've known both Lewis and Nico's personalities for a while now.

Nico has always been the cool, calculated & shrewd one whereas Lewis while faster has always been the impulsive hot head both on and especially off the track. The last few years in McLaren it may have appeared that he had calmed down a bit but I think that was only because he wasn't in the championship running and so there was no pressure on him. In a stressful/pressure environment, that's when you see a person's true traits come out and we're seeing those surface again.

Since they're such opposites, it'll make for some juicy stories this year so I agree - I certainly do hope Mercedes give them enough of a leash!

This is probably not a good argument, but I've seen my mother doing similar stressed wobbling at the wheel when she's confused in a difficult corner and unsure about the "grip" of the car. :lol:


That's what I took away from that. I think he just had an "Oh shit moment" and ballsed up the corner.

I'm still skeptical. We're talking about a Monaco GP winner here not a rookie. Granted it's still possible to make mistakes but as someone pointed out earlier, his wild steering inputs happened before the wheels locked up almost as if he was trying to induce the car into a lock up to give him a reason to miss the corner and bring out a yellow flag. Anyway it's fun to speculate but I guess we'll never really know for a fact...

I'm still erring on the side of mistake - even the most successful driver at Monaco managed to have a rather pathetic accident at Portier in '88. Schumacher made a couple of silly errors in 96 and 97 as well. I think it's just that Monaco amplifies tiny errors that drivers get away with on other circuits.

Phil PM'd me, it was a GP2 incident with Richelmi who didn't get a penalty when he should have done.

Is there any more info on what caused the penalties at the start of the race for the three drivers? Was it simply one them went ahead a row where Maldonado should have been and the others followed or was there something else to it? It'd be nice to see a photo or something of what actually happened.

When you arrive to Monaco by train, this run-off is where you end up after going downstairs from the station (windows you see up in the background).

It was one of the most astounding moments of my life. It's crazily cramped space, a lot more than it looks like on TV or pictures.

Before going further, I stood there for literally 5mins, just imagining what it's like to see cars aiming at that at 290kph before braking, remembering all what happened in that corner in history, and thinking to myself that Daly, Massa and Burti are three damn lucky bastards.

I don't know if you had the opportunity to do so, phil, but I heard that the most impressive display of an F1 car capability is saw at Tabac.

About the Mirabeau incident once more, Lewis didn't even see Nico's hands movements to doubt the honesty of the "error". He got out of the car already calling it deliberate. I guess he thought that, because he knew Nico found out he used the agressive engine map they weren't supposed to in Spain, to be a payback straight away.

I can't blame Nico if he did that on purpose, Lewis deserved it as any other of F1 liars and cheaters. The list of that drivers, among many others, include: Vettel(Malaysia Multi21), Schumacher(Monaco 2005, overtook Rubens when agreed to not do so) and Senna(don't remember where and when but also overtook Prost in a moment he agreed to not do so)

What amazed me the most is the elevation around the circuit. The run from Ste. Devote up to Massanet really is a big climb. On a hot day, I was feeling quite worn out at the top! Also, the drop from Mirabeau and around the hairpin. You can really see it in Phil's photos. I hate to think how far Patrick Tambay would have dropped if he'd cleared the barrier!

Didn't try for a tabard at this race - will definitely try next year assuming I go.

It is. It was quite warm when I did it and by the time you get to Casino it feels like you should be halfway through the lap. The drop too is surprisingly steep!

about that Tambay crash, if he got a bit more air, it could happen a tragedy like Spain 75, look at the people there

That's still "race spec" Monaco in most of those pictures. "Normal" Monaco looks even more different and especially the swimming pool & Rascasse area was hard for me to recognize.

I was surprised the first time I saw the swimming pool bits on street view I was surprised because in that part of the harbor there aren't no rails or walls, and is crowded like that during the whole year, it seems it's always chaotic
