yeah, it's just the Williams(already introduced in 2009 for their F1 car) system. VW is a client of Williams regarding KERS and therefore Audi and Porsche uses i's flywheels even in some of their road cars, if I'm not mistaken

Cool line-up. Experienced drivers, Porsche specialists and some good talents.

At Porsche’s annual ‘Night Of Champions’ motorsport celebratory bash held earlier today at the automaker’s R&D center in Weissach, Germany, the name of the new Le Mans prototype that will see the Porsche marque return to top-level endurance racing after 16 years was finally announced. Porsche’s new Le Mans prototype will be known as the ’919 hybrid’, which means it succeeds both the 917 race car that gave Porsche its first overall Le Mans victory back in 1970 as well as the latest 918 Spyder production model.

“The vehicle name 919 hybrid follows on from the tradition of the Le Mans-winning 917, but it is also with a view to the 918 Spyder, and acknowledges the company’s embarkation into the hybrid future,” Porsche R&D boss Wolfgang Hatz said in a statement. “Maximum efficiency in energy consumption is the directive of the new WEC regulations for the works-entered class 1 prototypes–and that is also the direction for the automobile future.”

The “WEC” Hatz is referring to is the World Endurance Championship, which Porsche will compete in next year (in the top LMP1 category) and whose highlight is the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Porsche last ran in the top category in Le Mans back in 1998 where it was the most successful team. Porsche actually made its return to Le Mans last year, where it was also successful, though in the lesser GTE category.

No other details on the 919 hybrid were revealed but recently Porsche said the car’s drivetrain consists of a four-cylinder gasoline engine with direct injection and two energy recovery systems. Recovered energy is stored in a battery until retrieved by the driver, whereby the energy is directed to a powerful electric motor that provides additional drive to the front axle.

Fellow Volkswagen Group brand Audi, which won this year’s WEC and Le Mans titles, will utilize a TDI diesel engine for the hybrid system in its own 2014 R18 LMP1. Another top contender, Toyota, is yet to reveal details on its 2014 LMP1 but is expected to stick with a gasoline engine.

Porsche also used today’s event to name the full six-man squad that will drive two of the 919 hybrids in next year’s WEC. They are Brendon Hartley, Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Mark Webber.

One final revelation at Porsche’s Night Of Champions event was the automaker’s new majority holding in German racing team Manthey Racing, which has helped run Porsche’s various factory teams in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Porsche now has 51 percent of the shares in Manthey Racing

When you have drivers like the ex Peugeot guys and Marino Franchitti floating about, I wouldn't have chosen some of those guys Porsche did.

I hope they put Webber in the car with Dumas and Bernhard. But I think the others aren't bad either. Jani shown massive potential in the Rebellion. Lieb is great GT driver, doesn't necessary mean he is good in Prototypes (Brabham showed you can be quick out of the box when he went from Aston to Peugeot in 2009). Hartley, I assume they have evaluated him a lot since I don't know what to expect from him. He has shown good potential in his junior career (maybe not F1 material).

I honestly don't see what they see in Hartley.

I don't see why Hartley and Leib even make the shortlist given the amount of fantastic LMP drivers who are stuck in mediocre cars. They aren't bad drivers, they are just completely unproven at the level they're about to enter and they're going to a big works team.

My opinion about Hartley is that he's the quickest of them all, Webber apart. Albeit that is not a top priority in endurance racing.

I don't know about his racecraft, maybe he may mess up eventually. He surely still needs to prove himself in terms of being consistent and not error prone.

2 Germans, a Swiss, a French, an Aussie and a Kiwi. Interesting line-up nationality-wise(not that it has any relevance, though)

Back in late 80's early 90's Germanic teams, such as Sauber Mercedes, had just Germans and alikes(Austrians...) in their line up

Hartley is incredibly good at developing a car and is very very technically minded, he's practically lived in the Mercedes F1 sim helping develop the car for the past 2 years, it's one of the reasons Red Bull hung on to him for so long in their junior programme despite his results not being so great in Euro F3 and WSBR, couple that with the raw pace the bloke has and imo he was always destined to land a top drive in Endurance racing... but I'll admit I'm surprised at how quick he's been snapped up.

But look at what happens when you put single seater drivers in endurance racing. They don't tend to be THAT good. Peugeot ran with all star line ups, and except for 2011, had the best car too. But they lost almost every year to drivers who weren't that decent in a single seater. Webber is different because he's been there before - he knows Le Mans. Throwing Hartley into a works team whilst there are a bunch of proven endurance drivers who are much better suited seems like a ridiculous decision to me. There are literally no positives I can see for Harley over someone like Brabham, Dumbreck, Bleekemolen, Franchitti, Martin, Pagenaud, Graf, Luhr, etc. Obviously some of these guys might not want the seat (Martin off to DTM is particularly disappointing), so they might not apply, but any one of these would be better suited.

Just seems that Porsche could've had the pick of the bunch due to lots of fantastic drivers not having decent seats due to the lack of manufacturers in both Le Mans and ALMS, and Toyotas poor effort not giving us a third car by now. Hartley shouldn't have even been on the radar when you have endurance names like those mentioned floating about. Seems like a waste of a seat tbh.

But seeing how meticulous Porsche have been in every other aspect in building up their program, one would think they have been very rational when picking drivers. Some of Audi's driver choices have been "odd" too, Bonanomi and di Grassi for example, but they haven't been out of their depth their. It is way too early to call it a waste of seat, but is probably a calculated risk.

Are people forgetting that Hartley has ~two ELMS seasons under him and including two visits to LM?

To me it feels like Porsche wanted a young driver, that can be a driver for them for many years (hopefully for a long time in P1).

Audi had the luxury of doing risky choices because they were committed to running 3, sometimes 4 cars. So you have 2 cars of experienced drivers who are known quantities who you can rely on getting the job done. Then you have a third, sometimes fourth car, to experiment with these sort of drivers on. Audi had the cushion, which I don't feel Porsche or Toyota have. Peugeot could've done, but they seemed a lot less calculated with driver choices, which really sums up the entire approach they had to Le Mans really.

It might be harsh calling it a waste of a seat, and obviously we're all aware Hartley has had experience, but if you look at the state of sportcar racing at the moment amount of proven talent there is about, I'd have went for any one of them over Hartley (and Leib, but he's another story) any day of the week. If you look at the possibilities Porsche had they could've have had Webber, Bernhard and Dumas in one car, and Jani, Bleekemolen and Franchitti in a second car. (would've preferred Martin, but he's off DTMing :( ). That's far more mouth watering IMO!

But hey-ho, it'll be fun to watch anyway. Either way I think it'll be Porsche v Audi for victory, with Toyota making up the numbers and hoping for a podium if I'm honest.

Edit: and my list of drivers didn't include anyone who is, or has been a Porsche contracted driver at any recent point of course.

Monty's speech at Ferrari's xmas lunch:

Quote:
In looking back at the year that’s coming to an end, Montezemolo mentioned the important achievements in the GT Championships. “Once again this year, we have had great results in the world of GT racing. I wish to congratulate Amato Ferrari and his AF Corse team: Ferrari winning a championship with a Ferrari is a nice happenstance. I think everyone at Corse Cliente, the drivers and especially the new World Champion, Gimmi Bruni.

Continued development in the GT world and the technology transfer to road cars has always been an integral part of our activity. We have won with the 458 GTE, but I also quite like the idea of racing at Le Mans in the highest category: who knows, maybe one day we can return and win, say thanks and come home. Maybe we should give it some serious consideration...

Sucks to be Scottish, man. :(

Well, doing it on his own terms at least. After that wreck at Le Mans two years ago, he is luckier than Dario. Anyway, very sorry to see another legend retire so suddenly. Thank you Allan!

Wow. That's two guys retiring that I grew up with and supported. McNish I met for the first time at Silverstone in 1993 when he was doing a test with Benetton. He was an incredibly nice guy, welcoming and spent time with me throughout the day. Thanks for the memories Allan.

Kelly McNish posted this on the midweek motorsport listeners collective:

Quote:
My husband has officially announced that he is hanging up his helmet and will no longer race at the level he is at now. He feels it is time to move on, he has achieved what he wanted to do and now believes it is time to concentrate on the next stage of his career and life.

When he first told me I did heave a sigh of relief and at that moment realised that sometimes it was a bit hard for me to see him doing what he does best. On the other side when I watched him race it has been pretty special to sit with a quiet pride knowing that he was one of the best, cleverest racing drivers in the world.

I have been along with him for the ride for the past 15 or so years, I have gained a few wrinkles after a few hairy moments but we have met lots of fab people, seen lots of things and learnt loads along the way. Always grateful that this path brought us to Monaco where I have to say I love living and appreciate the nice life we have here.

Allan will still be super busy – he will be commentating, guiding young drivers and instructing me how to load the dishwasher. I think his work schedule for next year is similar to this year so, my friends, you will still all be my company when he is away.

I couldn’t be prouder of him but I do wonder what he will want to do for adrenalin kicks now…..

My Scotsman has been released.
