That was the first race since about 2007 I gave up and went to bed half way through (time zone didn't suit). Since the only notable thing that happened was a mess with the FIA I'm guessing I didn't miss much.

Second half of the race was better than the first half, Massa managed a good overtake on Hamilton and Sutil, Maldonado did his best to cause a crash with his usual overaggressive defending as well as the Alonso Vergne incident.

I think this year the second half of the race tends to be more interesting than the first as drivers on older tyres try to hold off those on newer, its a contrast from years past where the order was often completely settled by half distance with no chance of any further overtaking.

For me the Alonso incident wasn't a penalty. (Neither was Grosjean in Hungary nor Hulkenberg in Singapore.) Exiting the pits, at the edge of the circuit, another car comes over and he reacted, there wasn't a way of making the car disappear other than by leaving the circuit. However, had there been grass there, he would have either lifted off or not gained the place. I don't think he gained an advantage over staying on the circuit (were that possible) due to the loss of speed going airborne, but doing so enabled him to gain a place he wouldn't have gained had the circuit been designed differently. The problem, as always, lies in the circuit design and the FIA application of arbitrary rules.

In this instance, Vergne says it shouldn't be penalised - Massa said the same in Hungary.

Just to annoy RtN I'd say install invisible Ridge Racer "OH FUCK YOU CAN'T GO THERE!" style barriers at unannounced places around the acres of tarmac run off and let the drivers choose to take vast amounts of run-off if they want.

If you could do it so the invisible barriers act like foam, great!

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

They seem to be doing well having random kerbs pop cars up into the air when the drivers least expect it
(Webber at China 2012, Sauber at FP3 India, Alonso at Abu Dhaubi) so maybe eventually they'll get too scared to wander around the tarmac runoffs when they all end up with terrible back pain.

Alonso had some back problems after the race, which were a result of the jump he made while overtaking Vergne.

Alonso is delaying his flight to Austin to recover from his back pains.

Ferrari 2014 will be home to a fragile back line-up it seems.

Haha, Alonso had to go to the hospital because of a possible injury to one of the most important parts in a human body. Hilarious!
