Might be some hell to pay.

There appear to be 2 clear issues; the use of a 2013 car is not one of them.

1) Did Pirelli offer the same chance to every team? They say yes, but they only made the original offer in 2013, and not after they sought clearance from the FIA at the start of May.

2) Did Pirelli run the test themselves? It depends where you draw the line. Obviously any team that supplied the car would have to supply the engineers to run them, and it appears that Pirelli were in control of the testing programme, but how much Mercedes input should have been allowed?

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

FIA on the Mercedes tyre test:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/107708
Quote:
The FIA says it only sanctioned the use of a 2013 Formula 1 chassis at the recent Mercedes tyre test if Pirelli ran the car, and if every team was offered the same opportunity to take part.

"Within the contract Pirelli has with the FIA as single supplier, there is provision for them to carry out up to 1000km of testing with any team - provided every team is offered the opportunity to do so," said the statement.

"Pirelli and Mercedes-AMG were advised by the FIA that such a development test could be possible if carried out by Pirelli, as opposed to the team that would provide the car and driver, and that such tests would be conditional upon every team being given the same opportunity to test in order to ensure full sporting equity."

Interesting, but I'd like to see the headers and footers to guarantee authenticity.

Goodbye Pirelli at the end of this year?

I wonder what will happen with Pirelli. Don't know if Mercedes is guilty (they used a 2013 car, they also know the rules...). Else, they will get a ban?

It's from Adam Cooper & that PR was issued by the FIA's head of communications.

This is going to be fun.

Ah well, its not an F1 season without a "-gate" scandal.

May even bring Jean Todt down. That might be good.

Ha!

No it won't.

It'll give him a chance to fuck over Pirelli. Mr. E will be on Mercedes's side, naturally. It'll be nasty...

Perhaps if it had been Ferrari conducting secret tests....

Does anyone else actually want to supply F1 tyres right now?

If Todt scares Pirelli out (as he seems intent on doing), and there's no-one to fill the gap, he will have to suffer the consequences.

Rumour is Todt wants Michelin back.

It's not actually an issue for Pirelli. They haven't broken rules. Bad PR, yes. Mercedes is the team in the shit.

Kind reminder that there's still no Concorde Agreement...

So....

= Mercedes have had the oppurtunity to test tyres due for Canada.
= Mercedes have had 1000km of testing to source more data for car, and potentially used new parts to add performance/verify correlation of new parts.
= Mercedes have had a hell of a lot of time to assess how/why new tyres are different to investigate wear problems and potentially reduce them.
= Lewis and Nico? depending on if it's them have gotten 1000km further testing.
= This was all convienietly done in secret.

How can the FIA not throw the book at Mercedes?

To play Mr. Lawyer

- Yes, but 90% of it was for 2014. Mercedes did not know which tyres were used
- Potentially, but how can you prove it?
- No, because they're 2014 tyres.
- Yes, it was them, that's been confirmed
- No secret. It was done in Barcelona post-Spanish GP.

The FIA okayed the teams using their own drivers for these tests.

Obviously, they envisaged every team (or as many as possible) being involved in these tests, and Pirelli do not have 11 F1 test drivers.

I was reading something 2-3 days back stating that Dunlop were trying to enter F1 & had held discussions with Bernie.

Jean Todt wanted Michelin to get the deal in 2010 from memory but the teams didn't like Michelin's proposals for 18" rims nor the fact Michelin wanted competition.

The problem I have with it is the secrecy.

Mercedes & Pirelli can go on about it not been a secret all they want but it clearly was. Mercedes, Pirelli & Hamilton/Rosberg all have twitter accounts & all always talk about what there doing with regards to test's, filming days or straght line runs. Yet there was nothing from anyone about running a test over those 3 days. No media were there, Nor was anyone from the media informed of the test & likewise its obvious that no other team knew it was happening.

Legal or not something isn't right about 1 team been given a 1,000km test. They may not have known what they were testing & they may not have been running new parts, However there still testing & still gaining a better understanding of there car & the tyres while the other teams can only do this during race weekends.

If Pirelli want to test tyres on 2013 cars, Make more use of the rule allowing them to do so on Fridays of race weekends. May not be the best option for them but its an option which they rarely make use of.

Pirelli and Mercedes-AMG were advised by the FIA that such a development test could be possible if carried out by Pirelli, as opposed to the team that would provide the car and driver

Hmm...

It's not a secret. No-one asked. Lack of transparency is odd though.
