I get your point, phil, but why would McLaren hire Hülkenberg?
I don't consider him as a top-driver really, at least not better than Perez.
McLaren always had top-drivers, from Hakkinen to Raikkonen to Alonso to Hamilton.
As you said, Button is lacking the final tenth, but in my opinion Perez is the best driver available, but we will see what he can do in a better car.

That says enough, best driver available at the moment. Doesn't mean he is a top driver though. Good but not in the same league like Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton.

I think McLaren went for the fact that Perez is that little bit younger and can open up a new market for the team. I think there's very little between Perez and Hulkenberg, although Perez will need more media training. And a haircut.

Having Carlos Slim supporting you doesn't hurt. Especially if McLaren is at risk of losing Vodafone.

Anyone who uses the loyalty card against Lewis' move away from McLaren has to consider the following....

Our parents funded our entire lives, so does that mean we should still be living with them? Answer, of course not.

Indeed. Alonso's career was mostly funded by Briatore, but he still left him in 2007.

If Giedo van der Garde will get a seat at Caterham I will never be able to take them serious. Best thing he has done this year is proposing to his girlfriend, since that will ensure he will be safe for money the next couple of years!

Seems Boullier's confirmed Grosjean for next year.

Fairly sure Pic's already signed for them.

It's strange, up to now he wanted to wait till the end of the season. Perhaps they thought it's better not to add him any more pressure.

I laughed at how he was giving super-extra space to the cars around him today in Korea

That won't be good for our Dutch people, after the crap with Albers and Doornbos. It's waiting for something better like Frijns, Melker, De Vries or Verstappen.

Otherwise, If Vd Garde gets a seat, maybe there is a Dutch free broadcaster who wants to broadcast F1 next year.

That would be the only positive outcome of the situation!

Agree I don't want Giedo to enter F1 because that would stigmatize the Dutch drivers even more as pay drivers, let's hope one of those talent's will get us rid of that name.

I found an old copy of Autosport from the 2009/2010 off season.

The amazing thing is that 95% of the opinion at the time was "Moving to Mclaren is a mistake Jenson, it's 100% Lewis' team, it's going to be worse for you than it was at Ferrari for Rubens" etc etc

To go from that to this, 3 years later with Jenson still at the team and Lewis not is amazing IMO.
I don't think anyone predicted back then that it would've been Jenson who won Mclaren's first race in 2010 or that he'd even still be with the team after 2 years, let alone at least 4 and maybe more depending on his contract.

Good point, I was wondering the same thing around Monza when the rumours about Hamilton leaving were strong but not official yet. I said to myself "why would he leave a team that's build around him?" and started to speculate about McLaren's athmosphere and what Jenson has achieved in a short stay.

All in all, there's two big things, Lewis leaving his "home" and Jenson's career. We all thought that when Honda left, Jenson would be out of business too, never being the driver everyone expected him to be in early 2000's. Less than a year later and he's the world champion, who's leaving his team to become a "number two" at McLaren. Last year he was definitely the smartest driver in tricky conditions with great results under his belt. This year he has been struggling a little, but next year he's going to be McLaren's number one.

I always thought Jenson was overrated, even in 2009 I wasn't entirely convinced, but in 2010 he gained my respect, and in 2011 I came to realise he was pretty darn good

Agree with the above 2 opinions. I never rated Jenson and I think he improved massively throughout 2010
