IndyCar remains on America's hat after a week off of racing, as the series stops by Edmonton. Home of the Oilers, an airport that's infinitely inferior to Burke Lakefront Airport, and the Edmonton Screwjob.

A sea of concrete punctuated by orange hats, oh joy. Is there seriously not a purpose-built racetrack that could be used here?

It's always ISC's fault.

I enjoy Indycar racing a lot this season, but most of my attention was paid to each individual race. So when I inadvertently looked at the championship standing, I saw Ryan Hunter-Reay is leading it by 35 points.

Practise 1

Quote:
Simon Pagenaud opened this weekend's IndyCar round at Edmonton by setting the fastest time in the first practice session for the Schmidt Hamilton team.

The Frenchman's best lap of 1m16.5391s was well under last year's pole time of 1m18.5165s set by Takuma Sato, and put him almost 0.4 seconds clear of Foyt's Mike Conway in second place. Justin Wilson (Dale Coyne) was third-fastest.

For most of the session, the man to beat was rookie Josef Newgarden, who set a benchmark of 1m17.1461s during the first half hour, when running was restricted to drivers outside the top 10 in the points. But even after the track was opened to the entire field, Newgarden's time held until the final five minutes, and he still finished the session in fifth.

Current points leader Ryan Hunter-Reay ended the morning 22nd fastest, one place behind main championship rival Will Power. The American was forced to sit out the final two minutes of the session for unsportsmanlike conduct following an incident with Wilson's team-mate James Jakes.

Practise 2

Quote:
Helio Castroneves recovered from a spin to set the quickest time in the second IndyCar practice session at Edmonton.

Castroneves' best lap of 1m16.4920s was just enough to see him clear of Ganassi driver Scott Dixon, who popped up to second in the final minute with a lap 0.0027 seconds slower than the Brazilian's. Mike Conway (AJ Foyt Racing) also improved on his final lap to go third-fastest, putting him just ahead of local hero James Hinchcliffe.

Castroneves was responsible for one of the four red flags that punctuated the session when he locked up and spun at Turn 1. His car was undamaged, but he caused a heart-in-mouth moment for Penske team-mate Will Power, who had emerged from the pits just behind him and had to take to the escape road in order to avoid contact.

The other stoppages were triggered by Justin Wilson and Charlie Kimball, both of whom spun, and Conway, whose car stopped in the pit entry with 15 minutes of the session remaining.

Pos Driver Team/Car Time Gap
1. Helio Castroneves Penske Dallara-Chevy 1m16.4920s
2. Scott Dixon Ganassi Dallara-Honda 1m16.4947s + 0.0027s
3. Mike Conway Foyt Dallara-Honda 1m16.5122s + 0.0202s

Some people on the Indycar facebook are thinking this is some sort of Ganassi conspiracy LOL!

Points leader Hunter-Reay to incur grid penalty

Quote:
Ryan Hunter-Reay entered the Edmonton Indy aiming for his four consecutive race win. He'll have to accomplish the feat from no higher than the 11th starting position.

The Chevrolet engine in the No. 28 Team DHL/Dr Pepper car was changed out following his victory in the Honda Indy Toronto two weeks ago by the Andretti Autosport crew as a precaution. Teammate James Hinchcliffe's car developed an engine issue in practice on the Exhibition Place circuit and it was replaced for qualifications.

Pursuant to Rule 15.5.1 of the IZOD IndyCar Series rulebook, an entry changing out an engine before it reaches its mileage limit (1,850 miles) will receive a 10-grid spot penalty.

Just got off work and went down to the track to pick up my tickets for the weekend. It was around 5pm when I got there but I had a 3 day paddock pass so I decided to take a wander through since the circuit was really quiet and figured it would be the least busy time of the weekend in the paddock.

But had a really nice surprise running into Kanaan and Barrichello outside their trailers! :)
Both were genuinely nice guys and took a couple moments to chat and take pictures :) Kanaan in particular, who spent a good 30 mins chatting with a couple of fans.

I'm not gonna give away who won the pole since qualifying is on same-day tape delay (NBC Sports Network at 6:30 PM ET), so here's the Fast 6 video:

If you must know...
Ryan Hunter-Reay won the pole, but since he got hit by the grid penalty, he'll start 11th. Dario Franchitti will start first. Remember the last time Dario was given the pole due to penalties...
Munoz just dominated Indy Lights race for his maiden win. Obliviously with only 11 cars on the grid it wasnt a great race. IndyCar really have to do something to make it more affordable
