GATORADE DUEL @ DAYTONA
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

February 23rd @ 2pm EST on SPEED
Race Length: Two 150-mile/60-lap races

Race Format:
- The two fastest qualifiers (the Daytona 500 pole winner and the outside pole winner) are awarded the pole positions for the two Duel races respectively. They will be locked into their respective positions regardless of Duel finish, unless they switch to a backup car for the 500, in which case they will start at the rear of the field.
- Cars at the Top-35 from the 2011 owners championship are split among both races. Odd-numbered positions race at the first race, while the even-numbered race at the second. Same with cars outside the Top-35.
- Starting positions are set by qualifying speeds.
- Top-35 cars are locked in the race. If a car outside the Top-35 qualifies in the front row, it'll also be locked into the race, despite his finishing position in the Duel.
- Most recent Sprint Cup champion entered not locked into the field will take the 43rd slot using a Past Champion's Provisional.

If I remember right it was to avoid conflicting with the Super Bowl*

*If the NFL had gone to an 18 game schedule before the lockout ended.

NASCAR wanted to eliminate the early season week off. They felt (and I felt the same) that it breaks any early season momentum.

All that's really been set in stone is that Michael Waltrip will run the #55 the Shootout, just as he will do in the 500. No Mark Martin I assume unless they enter a 4th MWR car.

That, and it's likely Trevor Bayne won't run the Shootout. Either the Wood Brothers take a "no beer-sponsored exhibition races" stance like Petty Enterprises does, or they're simply saving their efforts for the 500. Can't remember which at this time.

Probably don't have the funds to run the Shootout, the Wood Brothers have run in the Shootout plenty of times.

Yeah, it's a sponsorship funds issue. Larry Mac mentioned during the last day of testing that they hadn't "sold" the race and were just going to focus on the 500.

Would love to see a halfway decent ARCA race this year, but that's like asking for the world to stop spinning for a day. It can't be done...

Having Milka Duno around doesn't make it any better.

Oh hey, the #55 Venturini Motorsports car is now TBA on the entry list. Perhaps a certain son of a chicken restaurant founder might show up after all.....

The ARCA race at Daytona has been a disappointing follow the leader type race the last few years, with nobody so much as trying to make a move at the end.

Gerhart will pit on lap 10 under a caution and then go the rest of the way on fuel like he always does and win.
