May as well get this thread under way, with Speedcafe publishing the likely entry lists, tyre allocations for next year. Not too much that needs to be settled with only 2 vacant seats currently with BJR seeking a replacement for Jason Richards whilst he undergoes chemotherapy and DJR having to replace championship winner James Courtney who is making the move to HRT (TBC).

Other expected but yet to be confirmed moves are David Reynolds to the final Kelly Racing seat, Will Davison to FPR, and Steve Owen to replace Greg Murphy at PMM.

Steven Richards is being linked to the 2nd DJR seat (please god no), with drivers linked to both seats including David Besnard, James Moffat, David Russell and Andrew Thompson.

In sponsor changes, eNews is running with Wilson Security backing Jason Bright, Bisley for David Reynolds, Mother to continue with Jono Webb, Lucky7 to step up with Tim Slade, and VIP Petfoods to return to the sport with Steve Owen. This leaves no spot for Pepsi whose plans may have been put on the backburner with the James Courtney/FPR deal falling through.

UPDATE – James Moffat took the final DJR seat. Jason Bargwanna replaces Jason Richards at BOC. Greg Murphy jumps into Bargwanna’s seat and takes the Pepsi cash. David Reynolds keeps the Stratco sponsorship rather than bringing Bisley onboard.

Lee Holdsworth will become a proper title contender.
Shane van Gisbergen will win a few races.
James Courtney will be proven a fluke.

e) wrong

He won the title this year with a car lacking upgrades, driving for a team who was in the process of going broke and tearing each other apart from the inside. It was no fluke.

Courtney's title was certainly no fluke, however he's going to a team that finished 5th and 21st in the driver's standings and 7th in the teams. Having said that, I'd be extremely surprised if HRT has a similar year to this year in 2011.

I would expect HRT to bounce back. I think he is in with a good shot.

That being said, Whincup will be right there for sure.

HRT's golden era is gone. I don't see them bouncing back. Triple 8 have better prepared Holdens.

I reckon Will's a confidence sensitive driver, because that's the only reason I can think of why he went from championship contender one year to backmarker the next. Ever since that god-awful Middle East trip when all 4 Walkinshaw cars were nowhere, he was nowhere to be seen, and when he did run up the front, silly things bit him in the arse and stopped him getting decent finishes (big wreck at Bathurst, engine blowup in Tassie and another big wreck at Sandown). Abu Dhabi and Adelaide next year I reckon will tell a lot about his 2011 season: finish well and I reckon he'll be a chance for the title; couple of shockers and there could be a chance that he has a repeat of his god-awful 2010 season, which I hope doesn't happen.

Shame to see JC off to Holden, the old Red vs Blue days are long gone, Lowdnes high profile move to Ford in 2001 pretty much opened the flood-gates. There are very few one-marque drivers out there anymore.

Have there ever been any major one marque drivers over the years? Johnson started off in a Holden, Brock drove Ford's and BMW's, and Moffat ran Mazda's and Holden's.

Yet the rivalry has been the backbone of Australian touring car racing since the 1968 Hardie Ferodo 500

Nowadays maybe, has certainly raced a Ford touring car in the past though.

Sure has, his 1st touring car drive was for Mark Petch in the NZ Nissan Mobil series (Wellington street race/Pukekohe) in Sierria RS500. According to his biography he also gave swapping to SBR serious consideration at one stage but even though Ross and Jimmy were supposedly keen, Howard Marsden didn't seem enthusastic so he didn't (figured if the big boss wasn't actively pursuing you then it wasn't worth it). Now with his Holden NZ contract I doubt it will ever happen.

I said the exact same thing about Russell Ingall before he went to SBR.

If the pay is big enough.....

You're correct, but it's only since-2001 that high-profile drivers have swapped backwards and forwards at the peak of their careers in huge commercial deals.

Brock driving Sierras was more about his falling out with Holden & the lack of a suitable competitive Holden vehicle, rather than a huge $$$ deal to switch sides. Likewise Johnson's move "over the fence" was obviously very early in his career pre-dating any top level success. I contrast that with drivers like Ingall, Courtney, Whincup, Lowndes, Davison, Bright, etc who have swapped backwards and forwards during the height of their careers.

I guess there are a few that have tended to stay on the same side of the fence... Tander, Murphy, Ambrose, Skaife, Johnson, Winterbottom have all more or less stayed on the same side of the Ford/Holden divide (obviously Skaife drove Nissan's etc, but I always consider the other marques to be separate from the red vs blue "tribes").

DJR finally confirm that Courtney is leaving (We all knew it was happening, but now it is official.)

http://www.v8supercars.com.au/newsartic ... fault.aspx

And James Moffat is expected to take the 18 seat, but no announcement until the new year.

And HRT/Bundy Red Team Owner Tom Walkinshaw has died at 64, losing his battle to cancer.

The V8 Supercars Championship has put its hand up to move some of its event coverage onto the Seven Network’s secondary digital channel.

V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane has said that he is willing to have the V8s broadcast on 7mate to ease the category’s ongoing conflict with the AFL.

If the V8s are shown on Seven’s digital channel 7mate, it would be an Australian first for a major sport to elect to be on a digital channel.

‘Time shifting’ issues at this year’s Bathurst 1000 sparked cries from fans to keep the racing ‘live,’ and with the new anti-siphoning list released recently, Cochrane told The Australian’s marketing writer Simon Canning that he is open to the idea of moving some events over to a digital channel to have them broadcast as quickly as possible.

“We do have a massive problem at Seven and that is the (scheduling) conflict that we run into from time to time with the AFL,” Cochrane told The Australian.

“Our current contract says we have to be on the prime free-to-air channel.

“One of the things that will help in the future will be, for example, that we might put one of our ‘heritage’ events on 7mate with a replay on the main Seven network later in the day.”

Cochrane also told The Australian that he plans to boost the number of V8 Supercars rounds to 18 by 2015, with up to six international events.

Last line is intresting, six international events. It'll probably be Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Singapore, South Korea and maybe 2 NZ races. And the AFL taking priority over the V8's is the worst thing ever :yuk:

You know what, a lot more people like AFL over V8 Supercars, including me, so get the fuck over it. AFL will always win because V8 Supercars have about 1/10th the supporters so stop whining.

Exactly. Even the most die-hard V8 Supercar fan could see that AFL would take preference every day of the week.

And I like the idea of moving some rounds to a digital channel if it stops any clashes with the AFL coverage. Perth I can definately see get moved, otherwise the Sunday race would have to finish at about 1:00 to accomodate the football. And who knows, maybe we could get more than 3-3.5 hour telecasts for normal rounds. Win-win, I say.

Very very sad news

Here is some footage of him at his very best, behind the wheel rather than behind the desk as he had been for the past two decades.

That would be ok provided that the telecast actually showed some more racing, most of the telecasts have WAY too much waffle. It takes them an hour and half on a Saturday to get through a 20min qualifying session and a Top 10 run-off..... Raceday Xtra is ok for the supports, but it needs to be integrated into the coverage, like 7 did in the 80s, segregated from it.

I hate the fact that the coverage is split 50-50 between each day. On a Saturday, most people play or watch local sports around where I am, I don't think I've seen a Saturday V8SC race for quite a while, because I'm playing Football or Cricket. Make the focus of the action be on one of the days, which I'm presuming should be Sunday as more people are available..

I can't argue with that. What was wrong with the classic motor racing weekend? Practice Friday, Qualify Saturday, Race on Sunday.... seemed to work for many decades....

Having said that i didn't mind the V8 telecasts that were delayed until 4pm sometimes this year (in NSW anyway), it was just like the early-mid 90s, you could do something with your Sunday, then end it with the touring car meeting.
