I thought that Lawson may have put himself into contention for that seat. Then again, De Vries looked great when he filled in at Williams, and that didn't work out well. Liam just needs to put in a couple more performances like Singapore. Haven't really seen enough of Ricciardo either. I'm hoping some of his old pace is still there somewhere, otherwise Lawson will likely end up in that seat anyway.

Williams would have been a good alternative. I can't understand why they're sticking with Sargeant (other than for the American market). Yes, Albon is driving well and I wouldn't expect a rookie to be beating him, but he's been poor. You'd forgive some of the crashes if he was showing good pace, but he's 16 - 0 down in qualifying.

I imagine that part of the decision to prefer Ricciardo over Lawson stems from a desire to please whoever the new sponsor is, with Ricciardo being the better-known and more marketable name. Lawson should get his chance by 2025 at least, as I don't see Perez being renewed and Tsunoda may well be taken into Aston Martin's orbit at that point. There are also no obvious challengers to Lawson as top junior - Iwasa is going to be in the same situation as Tsunoda and none of the others in F2 have shown they deserve a promotion yet.

I can only assume that both RB and AT have seen something in the data and/or the sim about Ricciardo that he hasn't shown us yet.

I'd put Lawson straight into the RB seat in place of Perez. He'll either sink or swim, if he sinks, you've got two more than capable replacements at AT who he can swap with.

Pay Perez to have a holiday/early retirement, unless he wants to take his Telmex money to Williams for Sargeant.

Kvyat, Gasley and Albon all failed to fulfil expectations in the 2nd Red Bull seat, why would they risk to burn another rookie?

Spend a few million burning a rookie, who they can swap with someone at AT, or spend more than a few more million with a guy who's making F1's best car somehow look very mediocre.

I personally think they signed Ricciardo over Lawson for 2024, purely as an airbag for when they've had enough of Perez. He's not the right long-term option, it would be far better to have Lawson in that seat.

and not counting his crash in the qualifying

also interesting to notice Bottas treating his machine right despite staying close to messy drivers like Stroll on the grid

I suspect Sargent will have cracked the 3 million mark after Japan

James Vowles has basically said his crash bill is now affecting development of next years car. It will be mind blowing if they sign him for next season

Latifi crashed a lot but most of his crashes were pretty light. Sargeant has had a couple of big whacks.

Jessica Hawkins tested the 2021 Aston at the Hungaroring. First woman to test a car since Calderón in 2018 and first LGBT (that we know of) driver since Mike Beuttler in the early 70's.

Which only gets attention because she´s a woman.

As it should, until it becomes the norm.

I'm mildly annoyed when it's not precised which of the L,G,B or T the person actually is. I don't care, but where it matters enough to the topic to be brought up, then rather be precise.

Also, Mike Beuttler just sounds like a made-up name when talking about a gay driver

Or not because it shouldn´t matter. Get in the car, drive it as fast as you can, try to go even faster than that, and see if that gets you any attention from teammanagers or sponsors.

Gender is as relevant as nationality nowadays: neither will matter, because F1 team can only hire a driver that has 40 super license points anyway, which means he or she has already proven to be a capable driver.

I wonder if they'll ever drop this license points bulshit someday, because as you all can see some of the drivers still act like early 90's pay drivers from pre-qualifying sessions

It will never be dropped as it is part of a racket to force drivers into doing F3 and then F2 as opposed to alternative championships, which killed the alternatives that existed at the time and now prevents new alternatives from starting up and threatening the hegemony.
