They really should have Tecpro barriers everywhere. It cannot be a cost issue that there was no protection there.

Not for shallow impact angles. You don't want to catch the car and stop it suddenly, you want it to slide and redirect. That's why they have concrete walls on straights, and they're actually putting concrete blocks now it seems.

I'm surprised that there was Armco at an angle to the track at place that hosts F1. That just seems like something you'd see here at a dirt/paved short track here in the States, not F1. If we've learned anything over the years, if there's a spot on the track that's still unsafe, they'll find it eventually. (Thinking of Sadler's Pocono wreck in 2010 as I type this)

I thought the same. Reminds me of this head-on in Canada by Kubica.

interesting to see that he might had more injuries from escaping the wreck rather that from the wreck itself

People were crossing gravel and coming back into traffic. It's not just Romain, almost everyone at the back was being a dumbass and taking obnoxious lines and taking to run-off ondtead of lifting off.

With an open-face helmet, too. That's dedication.

I almost posted a sarcastic comment to this effect just before the race started. I'm glad I didn't bother :whistling:

Are the new barriers concrete ones? That's concerning

That's better with today's cars. Big initial impact but keeps the car sliding, rather than mangled in a sudden stop.

The impact G must have been massive. Went into the barrier and just stopped.

don't even bother, races that have those huge crashes are usually boring after the incident

You know what...I'm fucking MAD at Grosjean after seeing his replays. He just didn't have ANY awareness AT ALL!! Instead of you know...taking your foot off the gas instead of hitting someone he just swerved WILDLY across the road where he knew that there would have been a car. Look at the angle of his steering wheel.

Instead now we are all going to say Oh My God what a miracle the cars are so safe. How lucky was he. Instead of saying hey Roman have a stint on the side lines for DANGEROUS and IRRIOSPONSIBLE driving!!!

He should be banned for his actions.

Same tbh. Especially as it's not an isolated case.

I'm EXTREMELY glad he's okay, but it's not the first time he did this and today he nearly killed himself and 4 marshals. Not to mention the danger he posed to other drivers, had he not been at the back, with the rear wheel crossing the across the track.

I'm not a fan of Kvyat but he nearly went off track to try and avoid him.

I'm just glad that the FIA did their job impeccably.

Bit Harsh

The cars ahead had to lift and avoid Stroll who was coming back on the track from the runoff.
Romain was far back enough that he just saw the cars slowing down and swerved to avoid, but had the Alpha Tauri on his inside to turn over the nose of.

Crazy, but a chain reaction deal.

As much as I agree with this, I believe there will be the right time for it.

Now we don't even know how he will get away from this.

Stroll's onboard, jumping the gravel trap and coming back into traffic barely in control.

I don't know if this crash will get drivers to become conscious of their fragility, or on the other hand keep feeling invincible and acting like dumbasses on a straight line at the start

Kvyat kept watching in the mirrors after they hit.

Magnussen also got lucky on the other side. Could have been a nasty hit too

This crash is so big I'm half expecting Stanway to show up soon saying "Hey guys, did I miss anything?" :whistling:

Got a split second to react in such a case. Slam on the brakes and hope you don't get rear-ended or swerve to miss and hope there isn't a car beside you.
