ah fuck this is one of the stuff I hate the most in F1 (alongside with VSC and not closing the pits during safety cars). they should put the heads of those who reversed this ban inside the tire blankets, bunch of twats

For the past few months Liberty (Ross Brawn in particular) have been on a charm offensive to win the teams around to the 2021 rules package.

This is the result of that hard work;

I am shocked that the teams that are winning want to keep the rules the same

I really hope F1 popularity decreases dramatically so they can stop being that bunch of idiots

Won't stop them being idiots, it would more likely make them more idiotic.

I tend to come at it from the angle that most new tracks are bland because they have no history attached to them. In the Lap of the Gods video, Murray Walker says the old Hockenheim was boring and Suzuka wasn't a great circuit. Most people hated the Hungaroring and the new Nurburgring when they were built. Even the A1-Ring had its critics. A lot of the "character" in circuits develops over time as more races happen there, until it sticks around long enough for people to get nostalgic about it

Plus, a lot of circuit design that's good or bad doesn't appear just by looking at a map. It comes from elevation changes, the location, the size of run-off area and the local climate. Istanbul in theory was a good track, in terms of the layout, but I never really warmed to it because of the car park-sized run-off on the outside of every corner. By contrast, Montreal doesn't have an interesting track layout - no one would draw a track like that from scratch - but it has an abrasive surface and concrete walls next to the racing line so it produces great races

The question is, would you miss this track in 2 or 3 years' time if it dropped off the calendar? I don't miss most of the circuits that have dropped off in the last 10 years. It's a real shame we're not going to have a race in Germany, though, at either of the circuits. Of the current circuits, I definitely wouldn't miss Sochi or Austin, and probably not Shanghai or Abu Dhabi either. I'd take losing Catalunya if it meant moving the Spanish GP back to Jerez

So looking forward for the next Paul Ricard race. :(

Excuse me but Jerez is even more narrow & twisted than Catalunya. I have no idea how can anyone look forward to F1 racing there?

Spain is bike country, they build a ton of circuits that suit bike racing but are horrible for car racing. Hell, Catalunya is the supposed designated car racing track and it's absolutely horrible in F1.

Zandvoort will be a huge reminder for everyone how these old school narrow tracks don't fit with modern F1 anymore.

Fwiw I like Paul Ricard and I think it's worth keeping, if only to have a race in France. It's got a lot of history attached to it

Jerez is a cool track. It used to be very twisty but the last two F1 races there were on the current track which was a lot more open than the original layout (chicane aside) and they were decent races. I think it would work a lot better with the current cars than Catalunya which had very few heavy braking zones which is the big problem with it these days

But yeah, otherwise most of the circuits in Spain are unremarkable, particularly the two in Valencia

I think Zandvoort will be fine. It's narrow and twisty but there's not much room for error and I think that'll make it interesting, in the same way Suzuka doesn't have many obvious overtaking spots and yet usually creates good racing regardless. At the very least, it's a nice random factor in the season because it's a new circuit and quite unique on the calendar, unlike Hanoi which will be pretty much in the same mould as the other Tilke urban circuits

Jerez is a cool track but the lap times are too short for F1. The track record is a 1:14 set by Schumacher in 2004.

Excuse the country bias, but Portimão would be an interesting choice. It was built with F1 in mind, it's got elevation changes, interesting corners, it's in a good area and it would definitely gather a crowd. Shame we can't afford it.

Jerez is longer than Zandvoort and Spielberg so I don't think length is a problem. Lap times were around 1:20 in 2015 winter testing so yeah, would most likely be around 1:15 now - I think that's fine

Portimao would be a nice addition. I'd prefer taking it back to Estoril, though. But I can't imagine there's going to be another race in Portugal until we get a top Portuguese driver

Portimao and Turkey are probably the best F1 capable tracks not on the calender tbh

Paul Ricard can get to feck and never blight my eyes again. How to take a great, historic venue and ruin it in one fell swoop

If I never saw a race there again it'd be too soon and I'm seriously considering not even watching next year's grand prix there

Magny Cours was underrated, actually had some good races there, especially 2007 (Alonso had to fight through the field) and 2008 (Hamilton had to fight through the field)
It'd probably be better now and even better under the 2021 rules

Which 2021 rules?

About that, what exactly is happening now for 2021? Have all plans been canceled als will the cars be the same as they are now, or will some things still change?

I liked 1999 and 2000.

And one of the favorites to race on in GP2 and GP4.

Man I miss GP4, can't get it to run on my newer PC's anymore.

I'm collecting a copy of GP4 today. Bought it on Amazon for £20. Still worth the investment nearly 20 years on

It's actually easier to run GP2 than GP4 these days. GP3 was my jam though, used to compete in offline championships in it, around 10 years ago.

GP4 was brilliant when it started to rain, or started to dry up. I always loved these changing conditions.
