I wish I was Ryan Newman so I could keep an eye on my own front end and how destroyed it is, for a change.

You mean you want to be loathed by all TBK members in general? I thought you’d already achieved that? :whistling:

Most TBK members wouldn't loathe my bank balance.

lol :D

So you've more in common with Chilton than you realise then. He doesn't have a decent bank balance either, his Dad's on the other hand... ;)

that makes me wonder if those drivers who bring sponsorship actually get paid to drive or just receive "a little help to cover his expenses in America while you're touring with IndyCar"

The way it used to work was is say you needed £100k sponsorship, then you'd sell your package for £120k, £20k bring your "wage" and £100k the racing budget paid to the team. Most sensible people would channel this through a management business too.

I still want to know how Veach got Group 1001 to give him $20 million.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

Impressive.

But even if $20 million is less than the sum they lost down the back of the settee last year, it seems odd to give it to a 20-year-old rookie in a niche racing series, even more so if family aren't involved at some point.

There's probably some activism involved in the sponsorship. As you say, $20m isn't exactly a small sum. Almost every Group 1001 brand is involved in insurance and this is likely a market share grabbing opportunity, as they know the general Indycar viewer would consider switching insurance providers with competitive rates.

That would make sense. Although presumably Veach came to them rather than the other way around - if they had wanted to get into Indycar on their own initiative, surely the best opportunity at the end of 2017\start of 2018 would be painting their logo on the sea of white that was Dixon's car at that point in time. In which case it's still a little perplexing how someone in Veach's position managed to persuade the marketing people there that he was the guy for them.

Or to put it another way, I can't think of any other driver who has ever brought that much sponsorship money to any team without either a) being born rich b) having a family member in the right place within a large enough company or c) coming from a small country and getting state backing. If Veach pitched them for that money, that's highly impressive on his part and slightly unbelievable.

He's just such a nice kid ya know. Who could resist his 12 year old charm? :whistling:

Yeah I really don't understand his situation. His driving skills aren't the most promising. Sure, he's young, but so were Greg Moore and Scott Dixon when they started and they were way more impressive and in less than stellar teams (and a more competitive field as well).

Once again, Grahame Chilton will stick his hand back in his pocket to put Pato on the track this weekend.

Makes a change, usually he's putting it in other people's pockets, but kudos to the guy, maybe old age is mellowing him.

What's the deal with Red Bull then? Are they just waiting for the season to be over so they could ship him to F2 or something, because they don't seem to be of any help to Pato at all?

Just read Helio Castroneves' biography "Victory Road: The Ride of My Life ". A very interesting read into his life and career, plus the "Trial". Also paints Emerson Fittipaldi as a total scumbag.

Or straight to F1, if the FIA decides that all of his past Superlicense points count in full. Only needs to do 2 races this year to keep the Superlicense for next year.

Otherwise, it is F2 and the hope that he can finish in the top 3 or 4.
