Ooooh are we implying that Mika Hakkinen was mediocre? That's a hot take.

Eddie Irvine said something similar in 1999

And he's an expert when it comes to mediocre driving.

WEC kills LMP2 in 2024 because of the extended Hypercar lineup. They'll be at Le Mans but as a non-championship event.

what proof do we have that he was a better or worse driver than others who weren't in the fastest car? Before 1998, he did not show a lot of potential.

I guess they had competing offers from Monza & Imola.

Being Monza scheduled at a completely idiotic timeframe (heatwave/severe weather-prone period and with a lot of locals going on holidays far away from Northern Italy), it is possible that ticket sales figures weren't that high.

It was widely rumored that the Italian round would have been moved to spring and this could really have benefitted attendance at Monza but no, they had to switch to Imola...

I think it would really make much more sense to hold WEC at Monza and World GT at Imola but, hey...we have 18 hours of Emirates Fairgrounds action and a round scheduled at the tail end of August straight in the middle of Texas.

So I guess that would be asking too much.

EDIT: but come to think of it, it's possible that Monza already had previous contract obligations to SRO to host World Challenge on that weekend, so they couldn't have had the race there even if they wanted to.
I hope a solution can be found for the following years, because Monza has always provided great racing in WEC and ELMS so far.

The Imola/Monza switch probably has a more practical reason as Monza is set to do some renovations in 2024. So likely a one-off replacement.

Oh, and one more thing: Spa clashes with Nurburgring 24.

It is an LMDh, chassis partner is Oreca.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you. I wouldn't put him in the same category as Hill or Villeneuve though.

Where do we draw the line though? The line between good car and good driver?

He outpaced Senna in qualifying in his first outing for McLaren and was a regular point scorer in the not so competitive Lotus before that.

Don't forget he almost died in Adelaide in 1995: his crash would probably have been fatal if a medical team qualified to perform emergency surgery weren't stationed at that corner.

Back on topic, I didn't know there were renovation works scheduled.

Nice to know, I hope for more covered grandstands...but probably that will mean just a cooler VIP area for F1 sponsors.

Spa clashing with N24 is just another testimony of ACO/FIA's arrogance now that their brainchild has taken off mediatically and economically, just like "we don't need Sebring, because we've got The Qatar 1812 Independence and Freedom Classic".

I sincerely hope manufacturers (especially the ones from Germany) will convince/force them to change the date.

Yeah exactly. As a GT3 class I'd prefer to be at Nordschleife than at Spa

I wouldn't mind to see the whole team disappear, honestly.

It has been nothing more than grid-filler since its inception, but always with bold claims and undeserved attention.

João Paulo Oliveira replaces him for Interlagos. He had lost the drive to Villeneuve originally in testing.

Possibly the coolest looking LMDh.

Let's hope for a good driver lineup, even if it will probably be made by the bulk of the current lineups in Prema LMP2 (even if, for the life of me, I don't understand why somebody would sign Kvyat or Grosjean as endurance drivers).

As far as I know, the program has been confirmed for two full season cars in WEC and at least one car in IMSA Endurance Cup.
