So, how can I get the practices and qualifying in the US? Motortrend+ is acting the fool and even though I have a paid account it's cycling at login. They may also only be carrying coverage of the race itself and not the prelims.

EDIT: I sent Motortrend an email. Is there some other service I can get that covers all the stuff Motortrend used to and isn't geoblocked in the US?

I don't think so as both WEC TV and Eurosport.com (formerly EurosportPlayer) should be blocked.

I don't know why motor racing organisers are so insecure about their own sport. Why the fuck is the 100th Le Mans being started by a basketball player?

Yeah I didn't think so. However Motortrend unfucked itself and all sessions except FP1 are available... Including a shitload of on-board, helicopter, race control, etc. feeds.

Because getting one of the world's biggest athletes, if not the biggest, will get more attention than someone from within motorsport?

I mean, lets say Tom Kristensen is more deserving, but who outside of the world of motorsport has heard of him?

You have to remember Formula 1 is a shit sport that's really well marketed, Le Mans is following that lead.

In purest form i also would rather see Jackie ickx, Tom kristensen or Derek Bell to name a few.
But i also understand the attention and marketing which a guy like LeBron brings.
Not that motorsports fans would care about that.
Its a money thing as usual ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They have this belief that James fans will automatically flock to the event or watch on TV because he’s there, thus bring in this mythical “casual viewer” that it seems top line motorsports have been chasing for so long. Maybe a few might watch, but in the real world the vast majority of people don’t give two fucks about it.

I don't get what's the big deal. Kristensen and the alike might do it any year when asked but class A celebs might not.

In the tv broadcast is very short event. Brad Pitt did it in 2016 and I can't say I have a recollection of it.

Anyway, on Reddit there was this Instagram image of LeBron. That looks like IMSA Lamborghini Super Trofeo from Laguna Seca but older than 2023 due to the tv graphics.

wouldn't make more sense to make him wave the checkered instead because is a 24 hour event and casual viewers usually don't get tuned on those kind of events, except for their climax?

It's not quite the same thing but on the national motorsport streams, "famous" twitch streamer Jimmy Broadbent has started racing in some GT series or other and the streams go from playing to a couple of hundred people at best to over 10,000 people when he is racing

If it's a longer GT race you can literally watch the numbers climb and fall based on when he's in the car vs when he isn't (maybe his twitch is pointing people towards his stints or whatever)

It's certainly helping the no-name, run only for the compettitors benefit national level GT series get some attention and sponsorship due to the extra attention its getting from the twitch kids and the 2 fast 2 furious type lads that follow him *shrug*

Traditionally Le Mans is better at the start than the end, when there can be laps in between the top positions and they're just easing it home (though if it is a rare year with a close finish, then this switches but only usually 1 year out of 5)
I guess they want the casual fans to watch the start then keep getting updates through the hourly social media highlights or whatever they're gonna put up, that'll probably earn them more money in the long run than them watching all 24 hours

I actually follow Jimmy, I find his stuff engaging and he's doing what we all would like to do.

He built a platform for himself, went from sim racing to being a competent real life racer, he's going to try to do the N24 next year and he's started a team where he's bringing other sim racers into club events in the UK and progress from there.

A bit more than just a random Twitch kid imo.

Well quite, the point wasn't the relative merits of Jimmy Broadbent, but just how even a name on his level can bring a much bigger audience to an even that they wouldn't have even heard of without that name taking part

Le Mans are probably going for this x1000000 scale
