Damn that was a helluva hit.

Race direction is kind of dumb. On cold tires, in practice, fresh out of the pits, you're to stay ON the racing line? Hrmm...

If car #21 hadn't gotten a little unsettled going over the curbs on driver left, he'd have gotten away with that.

I never liked Freitas that much, but this time I think he probably didn't want the session to turn into a crash fest with cold tyres on a damp track. Conditions that many in the field haven't exeperienced thus far. I honestly can't blame him, not as much as anybody who decided to ban tyre warmers, that is.

And bear in mind it was still a free practice session, not exactly the most sensible time to risk going flat out, side by side at Raidillon in a car the same class as the one one you're overtaking.

I don't know if it was due to the wobble he got on the kerb, but it looks like the #21 driver moved over like the #54 wasn't even there, probably misjudging the distance between his car and the other.

I think the #21 got loose over the curbs and the back stepped out and moved driver right. I don't think he cut it over on purpose.

Agree with the overall mess though. If white flags were waving, prudence would say back off less you be surprised with a car sitting on the racing line at the top of the hill. Which is of course exactly what happened.

EDIT: The Porsche that crashed in qualifying... That team has A LOT of work to do to be on the grid tomorrow. That one might get withdrawn.

Wouldn't be so bad if they were using the endurance pits, then they'd use that separate pit out. I guess they should add a bit of tarmac so cars out of the pits can use that instead.

Edit: Maybe not, the barrier doesn't seem to be as long at the end when looking down from Raidillon so yeah, even exiting the pits after Le Source they could still take that pit exit through Eau Rouge and Radillion.

Hartley the next to find out that, reassuringly, a mistake at Eau Rouge still tarnishes the car somewhat.

CanĀ“t remember the last time I went to the race and saw all the cars. Usually at least one wrecks it beyond repair the day before.

Harsh cos it's gravel and not a car park there.

In the rare case where going over track limits is already a time penalty, I really don't see the point.

He didn't gain any advantage, he probably lost a tenth or so.

#56 Porsche has withdrawn after their quali crash

#54 Ferrari was out in quali and #21 Ferrari is still being rebuilt around a new chassis.

Questionable decision for sure.

If the rule is a black-and-white 'can't have all 4 tyres left of the white line', then there's not much to argue. There's more than a car's width between the line and the gravel - Gio just ran a bit too wide.

The solution would be to cut the kerb in half and bring the grasscrete forwards with it.

Damn, I been waiting for this for so long. WEC > F1 during a weekend imo.

No, the solution would be to get rid of the grasscrete/astro turf/whatever anywhere and have drivers understand that the kerb is already a space OUTSIDE the racing surface, which is defined by the white line and tarmac.

That would certainly work as well.

The slicks are having issues

Post subject:  Re: 2023 WEC 6 Hours of Spa (April 29)

Yeah they are...

Does WEC use a different tire compound then IMSA? IMSA hasn't had tire warmers in a long time and don't seem to have these kinds of tire heat problems.

I mean this isn't a tire heat issue as slicks maybe weren't the right call, just a general question.
