I don't see anything wrong with them making the cars look more like a road car, Super GT cars are pretty much the same speed as LMP1 cars and I doubt their costs are out of control, but I think what they are proposing seems reasonable, and it's not like current LMP1 regs are cheap anyway....

Quote:
"At the moment an LMP1 is a kind of generic prototype and you have to paint it to put your mark on it," he said.

"The idea could be to go towards bodywork that is clearly closer to real cars — it could interest manufacturers who at the moment who are not interested in a generic LMP."

Vasselon suggested that the styling would be much more extensive than in IMSA's Daytona Prototype international class in North America.

The DPi rules allow for changes to the front and rear bodywork, as well as the sidepods, of the LMP2 base car in order for a manufacturer to introduce its styling cues.

The idea would borrow a key element from the latest GTE regulations introduced ahead of the 2016 WEC season.

Competing manufacturers would be given an aerodynamic performance window in which their car would have to sit to ensure a level playing field.

What is not being proposed is that the P1 division moves towards the introduction of hypercars such as the Aston Martin Valkyrie or the LaFerrari.

There appears to be a consensus that racing homologated road cars would not facilitate the reduction in costs that is a key target of the rule-making process.

plus I know which style I prefer...

Just admit you're boned and let the DPi teams come out and play.

No thanks. Homologation specials are a doomed path and I already can't get over the DPi bodykits ("is that aero piece there just to look good or to make the car faster?").

That GTE performance window idea... well look at GTE, BoP to the extreme.

Comparison to that '98 Porsche is unfair. New cars wouldn't have as flowing oldschool shapes even if the regs literally told them to have.

The '98 Porsche is a homologation special. When that class came out it was GT1.

I'm all for making the cars look like road cars, or at least allowing manufacturers some identity, but BoP Aero targets are going to lead to nothing but pissing and whining by the manufacturer's.

If you're going to reinvent LMP1 then either follow the platform DPi has taken (one of a handful of chassis with any engine/body work combo) or go for broke with the above proposal of identifiable road cars and turn the manufacturers loose.

IMSA got it right with the DPi's and the FIA/ACO just don't want to admit that.

Finally ketchup bottle opening in terms of announcements... BR Dallara (yes, P1).

SMP racing will have two cars and DragonSpeed will have one. Earlier Manor announced they are the first Ginetta customer. There are still some undisclosed Ginetta customers.

Amazing how much time that bollard lodged under the #2 Porsche was costing it.

Even with only 4 cars, the lead battle is A L W A Y S more riveting in LMP1 than in F1.

Quality over quantity. Shame we're also losing Porsche but there will still be the non-hybrid LMP1's and the other classes. There's been some good racing in all of them.
