The outright race and qualifying lap records for the Circuit de la Sarthe were indeed set in 1971 at 3:18.4 (race) and 3:13.9 (qualifying.) Both set in the almighty Porsche 917.

The 2010 laps records are 3:19.074 (race) and 3:18.513 (qualifying.) Both set in the Peugeot.

If we're going off the qualifying records and include 1971, then no, I doubt the outright record will fall. If we're using the race lap as the official lap record, then there's a fair chance that the outright lap record will be set this year.

To be honest, I am not too fussed about the lap record myself. I am more into the Hunaudieres speed records.

Bet on 400 laps then?

motorsport-total is reporting that Kyalami is going to be modified (up to Fia grade 2) and that the new owner of the Kyalami circuit is planing to host a WEC race in the near future.
