The Courage came within an ace of spoiling the McLarens' party. Early in the race Mario Andretti hit the barriers as he went through a wet patch at the Porsche Curves and spins into a concrete wall. He would receive some bodywork damage and slowly goes back to the pits for repairs.

The car lost six laps in the pits. With Bob Wollek and Eric Helary he hauled it back into contention as the track dried on Sunday, but at the end they were still second, less than a lap adrift. It was Wollek's 25th Le Mans, and yet again he had come oh, so close to the win he never did achieve.

It would affect his chase for the lead in the wet.

He later said, "That was really stupid of me, but when I got back to the pits they weren't prepared at all."

But the Courage may have dropped to 35th, but victory really was still in their grasp. The car was up to 3rd by half distance, into second with less than 2 hours to g and on the lead lap in the final hour.

"We were making up time on Sunday morning and I got on the radio telling them to send Wollek on drys at the next stop. There was a definite dry line. Bob came back, and I have to say this vebatim: 'No fucking way. Andretti, you're crazy.' He did two laps before coming back for drys."

There was another incidents that made Mario just as mad: "All of the cars were caked in brake dust and Courage was very concerned about its sponsors. The car came in and sat there for two minutes while they washed it down. And how much did we lose the race by? A minute?"
