I was just going to ask for a spotters guide for this too. Need the radio frequencies for the scanner.

Also hearing that the grandstand is close to sold out, or at least the number of tickets they are offering are nearly sold out. That's what a friend of my boss was told when he called for tickets anyway.

Pippa Mann getting a surprising amount of abuse for daring to announce a drive this weekend - seems a little harsh; there are far worse...

She will be driving the merry-go-round #19, and Daly the #18, both with Bryan Clauson tributes. Also JW tributes I believe.

I wanted to go to this but having a new born plus my father putting on a family bbq put it out of reach for me. I will definitely be watching though.

Silver Crowns actually

They had a short field and decided to let them race to make up the numbers

Ah, the good ol' CART-USAC wars.

That actually was a USAC sanctioned race that apparently CART pulled out of (as they had in 1979). From what I understand, most of the top talent was on the CART side of the fence... not too many Indy cars entered, hence the Silver Crown cars were called on to make up the field.

The 1981-82 USAC "Gold Crown" championship also included dirt tracks. That's probably an odd championship in itself, I assume they were *not* running the winged speedway type cars at those tracks...

It is rather interesting that CART itself was originally formed out of a "split" in AOWR - just the same as IRL

Big difference is that USAC allowed them to run the Indy 500

Back in the early 70's the USAC National Championship consisted of Pavement ovals, Dirt Ovals and Road Courses (1, Sears Point.) It was a true National Championship since you had to be good on everything to win. They ran the rear engine Indycars on the pavement and road course and the Silver Crown cars on the dirt.

^ That's a true championship right there. Today Indycar fans brag about how it's the most diverse series but that's just rubbish.

Awww no Friday practice sessions, lame

It's going to be hard to watch this race after last year. I'm fully aware it was a freak accident, but damn, every lap will be a reminder.

I really miss Justin :(

Yeaa it'll be hard. Honestly I still can't believe he's gone because of how small an accident it actually was. You see all the big accidents all the time and they walk away. With Justin it was just a bit of debris from someone elses crash. That's what I really can't get my head around.

I think that's the worst part of it really - it does (and did) seem like a fairly nothing accident, but then you think about the mass and forces at work :(

Man everyone is right a year ago we lost Justin Wilson.

Man still can't believe he's gone such a freak accident.

All I'm saying is I hope no one gets hurt in the race this year I'm hoping.
