I'm sure there will be a bustling field of double figures because this year is the year Indy lights is going to break out, for some reason.... :whistling:

Last year they actually had, er, 3 locations with 10 drivers, even 11 on one occasion! :p

Currently per the Wiki 5 signed drivers and 7 "TBAs". So there's actually a chance they will repeat this slight scrape into double digit territory at a couple of races this year! :p

Why has Lights become so terrible? Indycar seems to be in a good place right now. You'd think that the feeder series might have seen some benefit as well. Maybe coming through the European feeder series is still an easier way to make it to Indy.

From what I understand it's relatively expensive. As a feeder series it still is serving its role as a stepping stone to Indycar (a fair bit of the newer drivers have spent some time in the series), though. There's only so many top tier slots, though. The more "affordable" USF2000 gets more like 20ish entries these days (although ~8 years ago it seems like they were attracting 30+ entries at some events, so maybe there's just been a bit of decline in formula racing interest overall, or even (considering NASCAR's woes) racing in general in North America).

That gives them a chance to clean the series up and make it cheaper

I hope it doesn’t destroy the series. It really needs more support from IndyCar’s powerhouses.

Willing to bet they had even less entries than normal and they might have been close to an announcement like this even pre-pandemic

At least they now have the rest of the year to sort something for next year, but I'll never expect anything more than 8 entries for that show, max. Whatever its problems are, they haven't gone away or been fixed in about 10 years now, so I'm not sure what 1 extra year can do about it

Probably the same issue that contributed to CART's downfall, but on a somewhat smaller scale: teams are more inclined to pass over homegrown talent in favor of F1 outcasts or those from other European formula racing.
