Oh look, another moaning driver, we then goto the next interview and new driver complains about original moaning driver not holding his line....

Texas 2012 was the worst oval race ever tbh, Ed was right to complain about it.

Remind me, what happened then?

2012? It was the race where they took so much down force off the cars they couldn't even follow another after 2 laps and a couple crashed all by themselves because the cars just spun while cruising due to the lack of downforce.

Or are you talking about the first bit? Montoya was moaning about how dangerous it was, then they interviewed RHR and he goes 'crashed was caused by Montoya weaving all over road' (kinda paraphrasing there).

It was the Texas 2012 bit. I remember that race now. The cars were very much on edge throughout.

Race was awesome to watch for sure, was really fun watching some of the batshit insane moves some of the drivers were making. I had a bad feeling though when they were restarting with only 3 laps to go, wish race control had red flagged it at the time of the Sato/Power crash (8 to go).

Have to agree with some of the drivers (TK, RHR, Power, Briscoe etc.) as well. I think a easy medium isn't far away in my opinion as well, considering they added 300 pounds of downforce just for this race. But the only way you WILL truly know is if they test all options of aero.

Despite the crashes at the end though, this has to be one of the best races in 2015.

All I know is that was a great race and everyone got out unscathed. The Saavedra/Coletti/Hawksworth crash at Indy was just as big as anything we saw today but people weren't complaining about the racing there. Plus I don't think today is comparable to Vegas - Vegas was literally an accident waiting to happen (multiple near misses and a fatal accident within 10 minutes) whereas today the pack was more spread out and they made it 500 miles with only a couple of crashes.

Maybe it was too dangerous, I don't know. I'll leave that for other people to decide. But it got my adrenaline pumping more than any other race has done for years, and I found that refreshing in the world of cotton wool-wrapped racing (I'm looking at you F3, for red flagging races in case drivers crash into each other).

The racing at Texas in 2012 was great & I brought it up in reference to Ed's comments because I remember at the time Ed made them (Via a mid-race tweet) pretty much everyone said he could f**k off because the racing was better.
Ed's tweet is on page 12:

It had a better finish than today's race.

I actually have liked all of the Texas races with the DW12/IR15 chassis, I only fell asleep watching 1 of them (last years) but pain killers after a major injury can do that to you :P

Either way, I really don't know what to think, other than that was insanely awesome racing to watch today on a fans perspective

I was about to post that.

Shots fucking fired. Miller's right, tho, this race needs to be on September or October--hell, a March or April date would be fine by me.

I'm disappointed in the opinions expressed by many on this board. It smells of hypocrisy. Seems to me that the majority of us agreed that pack racing had to go despite it's raw excitement. Now, after watching the race and reading through these comments, I generally find that the style of racing on offer today was the greatest thing ever witnessed. It can't be had both ways. Was it exciting? Yes. Now ask why was it exciting. Was it because it was genuinely amazing racing or was it because it was genuinely death defying? I feel it was much more the latter than the former. Raise your hand if you were waiting for a huge, horrifying crash to happen... Then, as if prophetic, everyone calling for a red flag got what they wanted.

Y'all can bash me all you want but look at this race honestly. We haven't seen anything like this since the IRL days... Is that a bad thing?

Now, something else of note... Briscoe went over backwards at a slower speed than any of the wrecks at Indy... In a Honda. I don't think it's the aerokits at all, it Dallara's floor. Also notice that the rear of Hunter-Reay's car lifts up a little before setting back down. Food for thought.

The season ends on Labor Day. Indycar has plenty of time to test before next year to get this mess sorted out. The remainder of this year will have to be dealt with as it comes.

If the teams really want to make a statement, then all those who are opposed to racing like this simply need to leave their cars on the trailer. They're ultimately co-signing the bullshit by agreeing to race under conditions they themselves are deeming unnecessarily dangerous.

EDIT: I really do like Robin Miller and he's right. I don't know about one of the 5 best Indycar races I've ever seen (I have to admit that even though it was damn good, I think I was more worried about what I might see than what I was actually seeing) but the rest of that is spot on. The entire series is a management disaster. If they lose Honda in 2017, they lose the series anyway.

The one bit of defense I'll provide for IndyCar is that I really doubt they expected the bit of downforce they added to have such a drastic effect on the racing.

But seriously, can't go back to doing this on the reg. Just plain asking for trouble. And it's barely legit racing anyway. Today was a LITTLE better than the crazy IRL days of 10 years ago, simply because guys could complete passes. But the danger level was still more or less pegged. Wheldon should have been the last straw.

Racing like Daytona - everyone whinges
Racing single file with 2 cars on the lead lap and no passing - everyone whinges

Just take a little bit of wing out and it should be decent

Exactly as stated. In the absolute worst IRL days (the end of "pack racing") the cars got side by side and stalled and that was that. Rows and rows of cars stalled out, with 0 draft effect to help. This was much different, this was pass and repass. This was dive high or low. This was CART 98-01 stuff. Those cars did it without wheel guards or wide side pods. I'd venture to guess they did it at the same or greater speed. This was a great show. This was a talladega/daytona slingshot draft type race, not grouped up packs with no momentum and no place to go to use it.

As an aside, I was never against the pack racing, even when Dan was killed. The side by side inches apart at high speeds in this form is acceptable. Also to was it death defying? It sure was. That's what separates the racers from everyone else.
