The 1992 Indy 500 is a really odd race. It was run in Antarctica resulting in absolute crash fest with nearly 100 laps of yellow. The few green laps that were run weren't thrilling - Andretti was killing everyone. However it had one of the best finishes ever with Al Jr and Goodyear. |

The way I look at it: the '92 race wasn't actually a good race. It was a memorable race with an incredible finish. |

From all I've heard, USAC in the 1970s was fairly incompetent at anything but running the Indy 500... there was a real good reason that CART happened. (Of course, now Indycar is owned by Roger Penske, who among other things managed to maintain roughly 30 years of Marlboro sponsorship for Team Penske without shooting himself in the foot. The Hulman family, in contrast... *cough*... let's just say that I'm glad Penske now has ownership during this COVID-19 timeline...) |

I looked at a few USAC highlights from 1970-71, and it really feels as much the fault of Marlboro's lack of motivation and outright dickishness as it is USAC's ineptitude. There were very few advertisements in the papers, very few billboards at the races, and the Marlboro decals on the cars were so small they might as well not have existed. Marlboro's situation felt like they had a bunch of ad money they couldn't use on TV anymore, heard that motor racing was the "sport of the 70's", threw money at USAC hoping to make a quick buck without a plan both parties could benefit from long-term (or even short-term), and when they saw the deal wasn't making them the money they were hoping for, used Viceroy's entry as an excuse to bail out. Notice that in the press release the very thought Marlboro might've demanded USAC step in and ax the Parnell/Viceroy deal and USAC refusing is not even mentioned by the Marlboro rep. |

is october 31st once again  and I still come here to remember how fitting was the combination of this light blue car, powerful engine, balanced chassis and good competition remembering Greg is not only a moment to praise the great driver he was, but the great moment the series provided to us at their heyday RIP Greg, even 21 years later we still miss you |

Greg was my favorite driver. I will never forget that day. I shake my head at what greatness we lost that day. Hindsight being 20/20 and knowing what glory awaited Team Penske in the years that followed, how many Championships and 500 wins would Greg have managed? The '98 US 500 remains one of the best 500 milers ever run. |
