Could you kindly give your opinion on the 2002 Indy 500? I've heard there might be a disagreement on who won the race that day....... :D

I don't think anyone won the race that day, it was settled weeks later in court

Only bad thing about the video is that part 3 doesn't come out for another month :(

So, I (and my colleague Anna) had the honor to speak with Mario Andretti on my podcast yesterday. No real scoops or anything, just a nice chat about his career.

Thanks! He's pretty available, if you have a legit podcast or works as a journo, just drop his PR rep an email. Her contact info is on his website.

I've had nothing better to do recently and have been watching older indy 500's. Currently on 1993 and (sorry if I did the link wrong, I'm shit with this stuff) but go to 1:35:00 and watch the interview with Danny Sullivan. It's back in the garage after he crashed and shows how the suspension pierced the cockpit and just barely missed his legs. With safety back then, could you imagine how a Hinchcliffe type crash would have ended back in 1993?? I know I watched this race live with my dad, but don't remember this incident or hearing about it since.

Likewise the start of the US 500 and all the wheels flying around, a couple of cars have wheel strikes near the cockpit and the drivers in interviews brush it off....different world.

I still think both the US 500 and CART would be viable entities if Adrian Fernandez just learnt to drive in a goddamn straight line at the start.

I am not sure the US 500 single event has that strong impact on the destiny of CART like everyone gives it. CART remained a solid championship later on - compared to the amateurism of IRL early years. CART sill had the best drivers and huge superspeedway races.

I think Vasser should've been lower rather than blaming Fernandez, but ultimately it's the organiser's decision to start 3-wide that led to this mess. Indianapolis works 3-wide because you're well established in a straight line when you start accelerating, when here they asked the drivers to do it in a curve (which got Vasser to be reluctant to start way down on a tighter line, and had him slide up a bit under the gas or so it seems to me).

Anyway we're not rewriting history... This has the merit to have gotten the crash-horny 11yo I was back then to get interested in CART and oval racing :p
