I always liked the big fast super speedway races... Here's the 1993 Marlboro 500 at Michigan for your enjoyment... The order is a little messed up in the vid.

And the '96 installment which was Emmo's last ride in an Indycar...

Love this one, Gil de Ferran setting a new Closed Course World Record in qualifying for the 2000 Marlboro 500. I'm assuming this record still stands? Love the way it looks like the car is almost crabbing down the back straight in qualy trim

Since Memorial Day weekend has come and gone, this is the weekend where Milwaukee normally would have been run. Here is the 1992 race, which was run after Detroit and Portland that season.

This race was also the only CART podium for the late, great Scott Brayton. Imagine what Brayton could have done if he had driven for a top-tier team like Penske or Newman-Haas.

The last race at Tamiami Park in 1988. It's a great circuit and a shame they didn't race it more.

An FYI, the 1995 race is on the thread's first page.

Since this would typically be the weekend CART would have run at Detroit, here's the race from 1995.

Wonderful thread! My fondest memories all in one place. Never have sunday nights been as great as during the CART era.

It was just something else. The ESPN speedworld editing, the nice looking cars, the driver line-up, the tracks, it had it ALL. It had that little extra something that current Indycar, while having amazing racing and competition, kinda lacks, you know?

I agree, it lacks something, not including spectators.

It's the cars. They were beasts.

don't forget the liveries and iconic sponsors. you had the Havoline car, the Shell, Castrol and Valvoline ones just to pick the oil sponsors

even the MCI liveries on the Toyota Arciero was fine, the classic Visteon with grey and orange and the Player's that won the championship in 1995 and then was in the hands of Greg Moore

And Budweiser, Motorola, Marlboro, Hollywood, LCI, Tecate, Panasonic, Miller Genuine Draft, Miller Lite, Duracell, etc. :excited:

I think the mid 1990's cars are the best looking open wheelers ever :)

and Kool

they had a great support for a healthy racing series, too bad they don't have that kind of support anymore

funny that in 90's we had a rivalry between department stores (Kmart x Target and maybe Ralph's)

Banning tobacco advertising REALLY hurt open wheel racing more than people realize. Marlboro, Players, Kool, Hollywood, etc. brought a LOT of money to the table that's just not there anymore.

And I agree that there's just something missing from today's racing in general. Not just IndyCar. Everything feels too pristine and perfect when it comes to the racetracks (other than street circuits). However, the cars themselves are the biggest factor. The cars just don't look as cool. They don't slide around as much and don't look as fast because of that. the engine sounds aren't as good as they used to be. And this stretches across almost all major forms of racing.

Yeaa, it's not an Indycar specific thing. NASCAR and F1 have the same problem but at least Indycar does put on good races. The cars used to be so simple aerodynamically. Then the use of winglets exploded. That said, I'm fine with the look of the standard Dallara.

Tobacco companies really did throw money around. They had lots of it to push their branding and companies are very reluctant to do that nowadays. Except maybe Red Bull but look what happens when Red Bull isn't dominant, see NASCAR.

at least after the tobacco MSA went on the number of regular smokers reduced drastically around here, but they weren't the main income for racing teams

but I guess no one started going more often to McDonald's because of Sebastien Bourdais :p
