I knew a bit about the American IndyCar Series. I believe they ended up racing early IRL-spec cars against CART from the early to mid 90's, before they went bust.

I'd love to see something like that again, maybe even as a support for IndyCar. There must be a ton of IR11 Dallaras gathering dust, all over the US. They could put them at good use, with whatever engines they car get their hands on. Big cars with low budget, and drivers with questionable talent, is what makes for a great racing series.

Not sure how many crapwagons are left - a good chunk were destroyed at Vegas.

I have a vague memory of someone doing an NFL (or MLB?) promotional display with IR11s with the idea that there was 1 car in each team's livery, but there weren't enough, and so some of the lesser-supported teams had other cars instead.

Yeah, I know he's mad and I don't care. I do not care. I did not care then. I do not care now. I'm here to race him.

a couple rare finds posted by Charles Intestine

USAC season finale - 1978

the first ever IndyCar race broadcast on ESPN, and the last of the co-sanctioned races between USAC & CART in 1980

usually it was at least 1 or 2 year old chassis w/ either a stock block Chevy V8, Cosworth DFS or the Buick V6 for power - at least in the early years. Alot of the AIS teams showed up in the IRL for it's first year alongside the AIS races on the short tracks & road courses given the 1 year rule that TG had on the chassis.

Other than the Moosehead races, only proper footage was highlights of the 1991 race at Juarez, a ESPN Speedweek news highlight from their 1992 race at the Nashville Fairgrounds, and random bits of footage from their 1998 race at Race City.

Here's some old photos that I dug up from a archive of the series website on Wayback Machine:

Birmingham - 1998

Twin Falls - guessing 1998

A full set of trading cards from the 1991 season is posted online as well:

Random gallery from their 1993 race at Mountain Mead

More digging - here's the United States Speedway Series website, the series owner re-uploaded it (slightly broken) a couple years back in it's 2001 format it appears
http://www.rvanwest.com/USSS/index.htm
(wayback has several uploads)

USSS site has some paint scheme / car photos from 2001

Wayback site has a photo from one of the races at PPIR - either 2001 or 2002

The fact that they you got live coverage of Super Vee practice, qualifying, and racing, along with practice and qualifying for the main CART race, really shows how little early ESPN had to offer as far as live sports were concerned.

I think there’s AIS footage in those Crash Course VHS crash compilations.

Just watched that last night. While it was nice to see the older names and cars and also have that many cars start a race, it wasn't much different from today street course racing.

Never seen this before but man what a great video. Really makes me feel like I'm at a mid 90s CART race again

I don't know about you guys but yes, I was fortunate enough to be at some of them.

great find, I wish time machines existed so I could go watch a IndyCar race "in person" back when they had insane amounts of power (hopefully we get back to them days soon, even if it's through a hybrid boost)

(only time I've seen a IndyCar chassis was at the NC Racing HoF museum in Mooresville. It's painted up to look like Rahal's 1994 car but the chassis itself I believe is a modified 1990 Lola judging by the roll hoop & the sidepods)
