That was definitely a case of the DW12's propensity for tipping up on its side when impacting the wall on ovals. Not a lot you can do to keep the car from going airborne when the side of it gets knocked way up off the ground at high speed...

Yeah this is because of the higher speeds.

so what do they do, continue pushing on speed wise and think of an improvised solution roof flap stye or give up chasing records? :? :o

Those cars doesn't break in the right way if they flip right after a touch with the wall. I think this is even worse than Castroneves accident in terms of that.

Just makes me thankful dracone isn't racing indy or we'd have doubled our flip count already.

X 10 if maldanado was around jajajajaja

Maldonado would have flipped someone else rather then flip himself.

Dracone wouldn't be going fast enough.

Welp, that's two for two.

I wonder whether it's a case of the aero kits contributing to it, or whether the increased speeds have tipped the cars over the point of no return aero wise (what I mean by this is if the original DW12 crashed in the same way, would it flip too due to the increased speed).

Need to get some roof flaps on the rear bar of these cars, see if that helps, even a quick fix strip of carbon fibre and ahinge bolting the flap to the rear guard cross beam would be a start.

Can you crash test such an improvised solution though?

I sense the 3 options to indycar atm is to either take the aero kits off, reduce horsepower or continue as is and cross their fingers no one is pointed St a grandstand when they take off.

Considering the importance of the kits to the manufactureres I sense they'd go for the middle option. ...

I'm sure there's a wind tunnel they could take an unused car to to test and see whether a flap would have any effect, even if it's not one that actually moves they can simulate it's effect on a rearward travelling car.

But that's if they want to....

I think Newgarden's flip was completely different then Helio's. I think Helios was more aero, while I think Newgardan's car kind of climbed up the wall.
