Why did Indycar decide to let them mount a bunch of ugly and fragile winglets that only cause dirty air, do nothing to improve the racing and cost money anyway?

The idea behind all that was to allow creativity and bodywork changes so they can make fans differentiate cars and manufacturers without having to open the series to high chassis development like F1, keeping costs down.....the real problem is: I think the way they've put that in practice is just wrong.

To begin with, DW12 isn't a good chassis....there were no escape other than fill the car with winglets.....and now you have that bizarre thing. I don't think fans will love these races....

Before I knew who was involved in this coming together I somehow guessed it would include Power. Not much of a guess I suppose.

Remember, unlike F1, Indycar can up and change the rules when they want to. Expect aero kit revisions by the seasons halfway mark.

Yeah...too early to write it off...teams now get an idea what to and what not to do with the new bodykits. I think it will improve in NOLA.

Oh dear God those Honda winglets are fucking hideous! Reminds me of the 2009 BMW car in F1 in its kill it with hell fire looks. I can handle the Chevrolet wings....just

I'm still interested to hear your reasoning behind this (repeat) statement. I don't think I'm the only one.

The car wasn't really, it suffered from poor weight distribution (to rear end heavy thanks to overweight parts) and a terrible habbit of of swapping ends at high speed, but Dallara sorted that before it was an issue and we all know the great racing it produced.

But from an engineering standpoint, the car was the equivalent of this years McLaren.

We waited an extra year for those aero kits to appear just to find they're made of carboard and fly off at the slightest breath of air? Bravo, Indycar. Another fabulous piece of work.

Great to see JPM win, but was it yet another race result dictated by far too many full course yellows? Were these aero kits and sneaky ploy to create even more FCY's?

Not really. There had been quite some full course cautions in the first half of the race due to first lap incidents resulting in debris and one for a stalled car in the final corner. But the positions didn't shuffle that much. Otherwise the race went caution free including green flag pit stops - the last caution lap was on lap 57 of 110.

Okay, now that my ticket to Hell is booked, this will hopefully prompt the series to do something about the winglets. Hope the fan gets well soon as well.

Surprisingly the piece that hit her was NOT one of the front winglets. It was apparently part of a rear wheel guard/rear wing assembly. That being said, your point still stands. Extra flying bits of debris just makes it more likely they'll hit somebody, whether it's a driver, spectator, crew member, official, etc.

JPM has suggested that the drivers just need to get used to respecting the boundaries now that the cars can be broken. Verbatim:

"They're used to working with cars that [when] you bounce off people, nothing happens."

I think this is a very good point. How many other open-wheel series have multi-element front wings these days, and how often do drivers (who are more used to it) trip over each other so clumsily?
