Genius move from the #30 and the #15:

#30 - don't put enough fuel in so if you get pinged for going too slow by race control you can say it's fuel saving.

#15 - say your throttle is sticking so if you get pinged for going too slow by race control you can say you don't want to press the throttle all the way down.

Easy enough to solve if they do this next year - aggregate the final by handing out points for each half, and invert the field at the break.

Ultimately no format is going to mitigate when one driver is clearly a step above everyone else. 10 hours of testing? Makes no difference. But inverting the field would make him work a little bit.

That was a waste of time. The American equivalent of an international series racing in the Middle East.

At the end of the day this was just a club event for the rich fucks that are members of this piece of shit facility.

If Indycar is looking to increase it's fanbase then this is the literal opposite of what they needed to do. I am sure the regular American public would be able to engage and relate to the atmosphere and culture of a place like that if they bothered to turn up.

Fucking gross.

if IndyCar wants to make a proper challenge should be in an oval. Do your shenanigans to scramble the field, but it must be in a speedway

of course, if drivers can behave in the crowd

What next, knock down all the grandstands at Indy and surround the track with McMansions to keep "the poors" out?

Christ, even F1 isn't this shameful.

Don't go read the development plans for Maggots and Becketts.

There's probably some obvious reason why, but I'm wondering why IndyCar have never raced on the Daytona road course.

They'd have awesome races there. Ditto Sebring, they test there, why not race there.

$1m challenge would be better suited at one of those tracks.

Both Sebring and Daytona belong to NASCAR, and they are not in the business of doing any favours for Indycar.

Ultimately, the event at Thermal is because the owners of Thermal really wanted an Indycar event (they came to the first meeting wanting a full championship race), and they are willing to pay what Indycar asked for in order to make it happen. I don't think it's entirely fair to attack the series for holding an event at a private member's racetrack - it isn't replacing any event which is more broadly open to the public (Texas is being replaced by Milwaukee), and as it's not a championship round then fans who aren't happy with the idea don't feel compelled to watch in case they miss out on something of consequence.

The track also gave a refund to all fans who bought a $2000 ticket when they were bumped down to $500, which I can't remember happening before at any race where ticket prices were cut to try and bolster sales. And I believe it has been made clear to the track owners that if they want a full championship race in the future then a greater capacity for fans at a more competitive price will be required.

Yeah, Sebring and Daytona are at the heart of Indycar's biggest issue. NASCAR's monopoly with tracks, especially ovals.

Plus this event at Thermal was better than the 6 week gap we would have had without it.

Ultimately, this blew up in IndyCar's face with the lack of marketing and pricing out the common fan who want to drive to Palm Springs for such an event. Both of which (well, one of, anyway) aren't IndyCar's responsibility.

makes me wonder why on earth a expensive private club would build a race track given interest in motorsports are going down lately in comparison to the past decades

The IRL FYI did tests at the Daytona road course in 2006 and 2007. While the tests were considered a relative success, there was some concerns about handling on the banks as well as concerns about lackluster attendance. I guess that was enough to prevent an event from happening.

Yeah, NASCAR has a monopoly on these type of tracks, that doesn't help either.

For what it is worth, the tickets were apparently good value for money;

I spoke with quite a few fans who bought the $500 tickets to spend three days at Thermal, and I didn’t hear a single complaint about the cost, the amenities, or any other aspect of the event. I’m not saying all of the fans who turned out were 100-percent satisfied, because that would be impossible, but for the dozen or so I chatted with, it was an overwhelmingly positive experience for them, and for varying reasons.

The all-inclusive food and drinks was a huge hit, thanks to the food trucks that offered everything from ice cream to tacos to sandwiches to churros to barbeque. I don’t know if we’ll get a crowd figure from the event, but I’d guess 200-300 fans were in attendance, and the semi-exclusive nature of the event was also mentioned as a positive — something akin to a private concert held for the biggest fans (who also have the financial means to make the trip and pay $167 per day to be on the grounds).
